Tor and VPN are worlds apart, but both of them are useful if you need to hide your actual IP address. When VPN just encrypts your traffic and appoint new IP address, Tor codes and routes it via various servers that are located all over the world (on bestvpnrating you can read detailed info). I also highly recommend using only paid services, seeing the fact that free VPNs can sell your logs or browsing activity to a third party that may be brought up against you.
