You don't owe anybody an explanation for shit. If they ask what you're doing with it then ask them if they are writing a book.

I have never heard this question asked at any hydro store. I really wouldn't worry about it. If someone asks tell em you just like bright lights and don't grow anything! ;)

Yeah, buy a ballast at a hydro store because these guys know what we're up to for the most part and need our business to stay afloat so don't worry about them. In fact, where ever you do buy it just pay cash and tell them it's for weed lol jk but I had a guy at Lowe's trying to get a lot of info from me when I asked about MH bulbs. I just said it was for an indoor garden.

Shit if you're getting it at a hydro store they KNOW what you are doing with it. They probably grow themselves. They want to keep selling you shit, and about the worst business model imaginable to have your customers hassled or jailed. The store I go to occasionally, it looks to me like 95% of the people in there are weed growers.

As someone in another thread mentioned, if you mention you're buying stuff to grow MJ and they proceed to sell to you anyway, they are now at risk for knowingly contributing to your delinquency (for lack of a better term lol). Therefore, they're unlikely to probe too deep. In fact, they don't want you to explicitly say what you're doing. "Tomatoes" is the universal code-word.

Also, I'd avoid ebay/mail order, as another poster suggested. For one thing, it's near impossible to consummate an internet deal with cash, leaving a paper trail. Also, do you want grow equipment shipped to your house?

If you're asked what the light is for, just ask them if you had a handful of condoms would they ask what those were for too, and I'll betcha they'll just turn and walk away.
