W'zup, RUI? Was just about to start my first grow (4 Lowryder 2 X AK47 and 4 White Dwarf) in a 30 gal res, using a 2' T5 CFL (Compact T5 GROW mh/BLOOM hps FLUORESCENT LIGHT 2'ft CFL - eBay (item 180240561414 end time Sep-04-08 08:44:11 PDT)), but was told this lighting would be waaaay too insufficient, even though the plants will only be taking up 3' X 2' feet of space. I was told this after I ordered the light, so I ended up sending them back, and now have nothing. Since I only have $100 left in my budget for lights, I was wondering if I could get a little insight on what would be the best move from here. I had originally planned on using T5's from seed to smoke, but now I'm not so sure. Any ideas on how I can make this $100 work, and end up with a nice, good quality yield? DIY ideas? Cheap lighting? Any advice will appreciated

Well. For under $100 all I can recommend is either finding a used HPS on craiglist OR If you cant do that then just go buy CFLs. You want as much lumens you can get basically. To give you a basic idea on a sunny day the sun gives off around 10,000 lumens. You want to shoot for 3000 lumen per sq ft. You can do more though, the more the better. It wont give you a huge yield but you cant do much for less than $100. For my grow so far I have two 3000 lumen CFLs, one 750 lumen tube, one 1500ish lumen CFL and I still am going to go buy more.

I am a newbie so maybe I am wrong but thats what I have learned. Good luck!

Cool. Thanks for the quick response. Any DIY ideas? If I can build something for $100, that's cool too! I'm starting to get a little panicky because my seeds will be here soon, and I want to have the lighting all ready for when they get here.

Well I dont know much about DIYs but I am sure if you search around you can find some lighting tips and stuff. I have learned SO much from searchings its incredible. Dont panic if your seeds arrive and you dont have lights yet. Just get everything else set up. Seeds can sit for a bit, they wont go bad.

If you do go with CFLs get a light splitter so you can have 2 bulbs on one socket, just make sure the socket doesnt get too hot or anything.

By the way I edited my first post so it has a bit more info.

Also try using google -

There is hundreds of sites and posts out there.

I have alot of tips and little things that I have learned, almost too many to post. If you have anymore questions let me or anyone else know, you will get your answer.

if u can go with hps or metal halide if not cfl's is what i went with i just did not have enough but at lowes or home depot you can get cfls 2700 lumen bulb for 9 bucks a bulb so 10 bulbs is 90 dollars and 2700 times 10 27,000 lumens and a 2 by 3 room is 10 square feet so that would be just shy of 3000 lumens per sq foot but you can get them closer to the plants so it should not hurt you that much

Thanx for that bit of info, Skunk. Half my seeds came in the mail 2day, and I was sitting here stressing about what the hell I was gonna do for lighting, but you seem to have helped out. How would you suggest I hook the lights up? Individually, or what? Not much of an electrician, so unless there's an easy DIY way to make some type of fixture, that would be my only choice. Any suggestions for making a big reflector, or a bunch of individuals? This site is the shiznit!
