Sex plants first if you do not know whether male or female.
The guy in the hydro shop was talking rubbish.
Age has nothing to do with cuttings really. If your plant looks like it can take the trimming and still leave enough veg to allow the mother to continue without stressing it... take your clones.
Strains differ... I've cloned at under 4 weeks.. some NEED longer.... also depends how many clones your looking for.
As for keeping mothers....
Varying theorys on this, but again some strains can't take vegging over a certain period without stressing.
I have personally grown certain strains for many years with cuttings from the SAME plant without any loss in quality.
Many cycle their mothers as you have mentioned and swear by it. There ARE strains that really demand this as you WILL loss quality.
Space can be a deciding factor.
EG. small veg room may not be able to take a mother AND growing babies, so easier to chop mother and just leave many clones (one saved for the next load of cuttings).

Sorry for not being sure but what does CFL mean. Do you mean flouride tubes. I use those in my vegging box. I use the 25W. When I used to use the box for flowering I just added 40W growlux and that was very adequate. By box is about 5' long x 30" high x 24" wide. It used to be a cabinet that was being tossed from a high tech co in Silicon Valley. I have been using is off and on for about 15 years. The box holds 4 double 4' flourescent fixtures. All hand made very poorly and repaired many times.

There really is no limit to how soon you take clones. As soon as you have limbs with enough growth to clone go ahead. I want to see at least growth I can cut that has a top and two new limbs started and at least two limbs left on that branch after making the cutting. Cut at an angle split the bottom of the cut approx 1/4" coat with cloning product and stick in a clone media. I use plain water until the roots appear then go to Clonex to feed the plants. I continue the Clonex after the new clones go into soil. My clone box has just one double 4' flouride and I use just one tube on 24. As soon as they can go in soil I stick them in the veg box on 16/8.

you can take clones as much and as soon as the mother will let you, youll notice if she stunts. also age is more related to the cuttings being big enough. your not gonna take a 2" clone. the cfl will work to see sex, but i wouldnt expect much yield at all. they might be enough for veg, i use a 216w t-5 and it works great. youll need to figure out how to get light to the bottom. i personally like to grow at least one mother from seed as i like the branching allowing me to lst. the clone mothers i take, i always take cuts from the bottom and when i prep her after im done, i supercrop her by pinching the stems and also top it to make an even canopy.
