i've run into this same problem a few times now, and what i end up doing is what your basically talking about.. its called supercropping, and it works wonders.. i just watched a few videos on youtube first to get a feel for what i was doing.. i supercropped at night when the lights came on, and in the morning, the bud that had been laying at a 90 degree angle, was now sitting up and facing the light.. it was pretty cool to watch.. the plant seemed to recover super quick from it, and suprisingly, it didn't seem to stress her out too much.. i even did it like three weeks in flowering too on my sour cream plant as she really stretched during the first couple of weeks of flower, and when i asked what to do, i was simply told to supercrop her..
i even just supercropped my og kush this grow even though it wasn't for height issues.. i did it to even out the canopy some, and i think it helps put more weight onto the bottom nugs that otherwise wouldn't have amounted to much more than fluffy popcorn buds... its kinda like topping in that way.. check it out, i'm sure you won't be disappointed..
