Can I have to much light?

So this is my first ever attempt at a grow Im slowly buying gear as I find i need it. I'm taking some classes at my main storefront dispensary I know the owner and his lady very well. I am actually the bass player of her band. So along with there help and a few other hydro peeps and dispensary workers who also grow. I'm getting closer to my actual start date. I knew first things first I needed to get lights. I always hear that more light means more bud, more light more light! So I purchased a 400w Metal Halide and a 1000w HPS for my 6'x7' walk in closet. Excited to share my new purchases with my mentor he informs me that unless I'm willing to drill a whole above the door frame for proper ventilation this was going to produce to much heat and since my closet was the size it is 1000w was overkill anyways suggested I purchase a grow tent and drop down to two 250w setup just to start plus it won't hurt my electric bill to much. I have the room in my apartment for a grow tent I spend so much on bud I never buy actually furniture lol. But I bought my place with the plans to eventually start growing so I'd like to start with atleast 2 400w light. I guess my question is do you guys think that's to much light or should I listen to my mentor and go to (2)400w. And hiw many lmants ideal for that setup. I'd also love any tips you guys have for me. I have about 6 clones of 707 which what we got to work in and take home from the last class. I think I'm going to go organic SCROG set up And would like to have my setup ready by the time they are ready for vegging I hope you guys can help me out thanks!!!

It depends on how many plants you are doing if you are just doing a few plants 2 400's and two tents one for mothers and clone and one for flower you would have no problems producing a steady supply of bud for personal use.

i would veg 4 clones under 400w MH for 6 weeks then flower them under the 1000w scrog style if you have no worries about how long it will take or anyone coming around.

A 400 will only effectively cover a 3x3 area so 2 medium sized or one big one. I would probably do one big one and fill up a 3x3 screen with it.

To answer your initial question, YES there is such thing as too much light. You'll begin to see bleaching of fan leaves. I've personally had it happen to me. I was actually using CFLs and pushing close to around 400 watts but BOY did those generate some heat so i used one oscillating fan to directly hit and cool the fixture. I had the lighting no further than 2" away from the plants and sure enough white spots developed on the fan leaves and they had a "bleach" like appearance that was visible on both sides. Anyway, I feel like I was a little too hard on them, especially since they were young in their veg. state..humidity was at 70% and temps were 78/62 so i knew that wasn't an issue. Take it easy on them when they're young bro, and once they develop and have a stronger foundation then give 'em however much light you want! I thought the exact same thing on my first grow, "More light=stronger vigorous growth+more BUDS" I completely agree with polyarcturus' suggestion on what plan you should follow through. Stick with what ya got and best of luck to you!

yeah i can see howd you think this but im growing not so much for personal use but for expeimental use i have a very specific plan with the rest of the plant not so much the buds so im giving al the buds right back to the shop. which once i get off i finish all of the testing ill share with this forum and completely change the game of what people do with the waste product they even offered the space for the larger lights but this is something i want to learn and do myself. and im told with my 6x5 foot closet i cant maintain a comfortable grow environment with out drilling some holes in the walls wirh a 1000w light setup up if you guys can find a way around that im all ears considered something using the sliding door it uses but after no ideas i just decided to go with the tent. im open and willing to try anything once atleast thanks!

Your can not have to much light but to much heat can destroy your plants in all honesty you can have a single plant under 2 1000W HPS and nothing adverse will happen to the plants. as long as you can hadle the heat which is tremendously difficult at first when i began i had nothing. now i have an air cooled hps with ducting and an inline fan with a blower fan another fan in the actual tent and a shop fan to circulate the air inside and that has kept me at 71 to 75 with my T-5's. yet it is not summer yet and i still need to flower so even on top of that i will be needing an AC unit as well. so basically what i am saying is start your grow and add on as you go

Lol are you growing to make paper? If your doin something like that you'd need a hell of alotta plants cus most the weight is in the flowers.

I run 1k in a 2.5'x2.5' tent, 200w/sqft still doesnt compare to the great metal halide in the sky bro...-S0uP
