Can I or should I keep the pots small?

Good good.
Well i would transplant right before they went into flowering. And I wouldn't let them strangle themselves, just let the root ball get nice and thick.
Roots do not strangle themselves, the whole idea of rootbound is nonsense & not even close to having any validity in most of our grows, here is why.

The main goal of the root system is to supply the plant with the materials it needs to sustain life & grow, these are water & nutrients,as long as the plant above ground is getting everything it needs it dont care how large the root system is.

The whole 1 gallon of soil to every month of life for the plant is valid for alot of plants including house plants or long term plants like mother plants but not for most marijuana plants, the life span of most indoor marijuana plants is from 4 months at the far end to 10 weeks on the short end, roots do not need to thrive in optimum conditions for short periods of time, they need to supply the plant & nothing more.

People have proven time & time again with picture proof that large pots are not needed to grow great plants, ive seen fdd post pictures of absolute monster plants in small ass pots as well as many other growers doing the same thing, read a thread that FDD started titled "It's all bullshit" & see small pots in action, see the myth of rootbound for what it is,i learned to maximize my floor space from that thread & never lost any weight or quantity at harvest,i was running 3 gallon pots before reading that thread & seeing root bound for what it really is.

I now use pots that are less than 1 gallon (3.5 quart pots) & i have excellent success with heavy harvests of 1.5 ounces per plant which is right where i was at running pots 4 times the size, not only did my yeild weights per plant not change but by running smaller pots i was able to fit more plants inside the same space, this added greatly to my overall harvest weight, maximizing floor space to fit more plants in the area is a much better use of the area over stuffing it full of large pots.

Small pots require more frequent watering & feeding & that is all, root bound & root death by strangulation is not factual information.

root craming can cause stunted growth.... i've seen it.
And you determined this because all possible other causes were eliminated I hope right?

Good info. I've read about air pruning systems before, and would be curious to see if they work as well as advertised. Do you have a grow diary up and running?
I'm not up in running. I've been researching and reading the site for about 8 months and just started tinkering around in Sept. My journal is more of a progress report of my grow room being built. Nothing fancy yet, but you can check out.

im with kingb420, I got 3 cabinets stacked on top of each other. Top is for the clones and 2 moms, middle is for vegging clones, and the bottom has two more moms. right next to it is a 3x4 closet with a shelf running half way up all around the perimeter. on each shelf are 4 cat littler trays containing 12 clones each in 2 liter soda bottles. 4 trays on top and 4 on the bottom. Clones go in at about 6 inches sometimes 3, they all finish about 22 inches.
