Can I Use HPS HIGH BAY LIGHTS For My Garden ?

Question: is there a difference in the way the ballast or light operates in a HPS High Bay Light compared to a standard HPS Grow Light and ballast ? If so please explain the difference in greater detail.
(lumens output, heat, spectrum difference, ect).

there sholdnt be any difference except the spectrum of the bulb....you can get the grow light for less $$$ though so not sure why you want w high bay light
 
Electronically there is no difference. You have the same ignitor/starter cap apparatus as other fixtures. Be careful though because the lamp reflector sometimes is not pounded, so no dimples to spread the light evenly. Remember , these pups are designed for mounting 15 feet+ high so dispersment ay 3 feet was not the designers intention. The guts of this thing is of most value. Perhaps you could mount the guts in a external metal housing and buy a bare-bone reflector. Free is a good price.

garden centers use those with 400 watt mh to supplement the sun thru the opaque roof. work great. those are everywhere on craigs. cool

I bought some of these from a farmer once, he had about 20 lying around outside his barn. The deal was $25 each, but they gave me a second one for $5 more. I disassembled the thing and turned it into a remote ballasted version and added a cool tube. I sold the other one raw for $25. So all in all, I paid $5. Great deal.

And yes, they do work! I had to do some research, but the CRI on the one I have is close to normal HPS lights.
 
I think that I will definately go with the remote ballast ideas as that is going to be the most practical.

QUESTION: How much power does 2 x 400 watt hps lights use ?

Is it going to be enough power to draw attention from the power company ??
Should I use the shader that comes with it or no shader at all ?? ( I'm not going to buy a shader FYI).

a 400 watt light will usually draw approximately 450 watts or so, for some reason (I think). I don't think you'll draw attention from the power company using two of them. A simple space heater uses 1500 watts, microwaves use 1100 watts, yadda yadda yadda. You might consider running the lights during off peak hours for thriftiness, although they can still see you are using X number of killowatts
 
great info. thanks, I think that I will use the lights during the off-peak hours for my next cycle. I wouldn't want to go changing the hours on them now considering they wake up at noon and go to bed at midnight as is. so I would have to change there schedule by 12 hrs.. not a good idea. +++ REP
 
sure you can change the hours just lengthen the dark period. The power company doesnt care pay them and they wont care. 2 - 400w arent even a blip on their radar. 10k or better to get some notice....at least around here
 
250 watt cmh for veg and 400watt hps for my flower room i add some flourecents for the sprouts ,but both my main lights are high bay lights

I pretty much have the same light but mine is a 400w mh ballast. It worked good until I bought a 400w mh/hps conversion bulb and then it worked better. Check out my pics in my profile. I ended up with 2 z's off the light. I got mine for free too and for being free I couldn't ask for anything better.

I'm thinking that 2X400 would 800 watts of consumption? Not sure what your ? is here.
 
Usually an HPS light will use more watts than it is stated as. Not sure why, but it is something I have heard and seen, even from manufacturers.
