Can You Use A Dimmer Switch As Fan Controller?

Hi All,

As the title says.. Can I use a dimmer switch a fan speed controller?

I found an old dimmer switch for a free standing lamp. I was thinking I might get away with connecting it to a fan and using is to control the speed.

Has anyone done this before? Do you think that will work?

dimmer switches are OK but you must know amps or watts that the dimmer can handle and amps or watts of your fan.

The problem with dimmers is that instead of regulating the power given to the fan it cuts the power on and off to maintain speed thus reducing motor life and creating a hum.

Don't do it. You can pick up a legit fan control at the hardware store for $10 - and not burn out your fan or create a fire hazard.
