mandatory minimums
These policies always work, as criminals are all both very aware of current laws, and always plan out all of their actions carefully, taking into consideration all possible factors and potential outcomes. :wall:

The only effective way to reduce crime is to reduce the number of criminals. The way to do that is through education and social programs, but those things take years/generations and require patience and compassion. I took a look at Little PP's record and neither patience or compassion appear.

It also requires looking at criminals as complex people, not as black and white villains. Poverty, mental health, addiction, cost of living and wealth distribution are all interconnected factors affecting crime rates which don't have a simple fix but require equally complex solutions.

Yup, that's the education and social programs I referred to.

The fix also requires money, which requires corporate tax rates to increase to more traditional historical levels (you know, like in those great 1950's everybody remembers so fondly ;) ), and once again Little PP is on the wrong side of that. He still believes that rich corporations are the measure of an economy, as opposed to the standard of living of the every-day citizen (IE the owners of the resources the corporations plunder).

"The Conservative Party of Canada has dropped a Quebec candidate after he harshly criticized Liberal candidate and Polytechnique shooting survivor Nathalie Provost online.

This is at least the fifth candidate the party has dropped as the April 28 election nears, and the second in Quebec this week."

SW Ontario
All the red election signs went missing overnight in a nearby riding. This is the second time that entire communities have seen their election signs go missing. Seems desperate but not unexpected considering pride flags get swiped there too. Evangelicals, calvinists, dominists in a buybull belt.

Orange signs were vandalized and stolen in my community during the campaign for provincial election. Just another similarity between conservatives here in my neck of the woods and MAGA. It just solidifies my "opinions" on the UCP in my province of Alberta.

Updating our tax code is long overdue as Harper slashing corporate tax rates hasn't caused the flood of companies moving to Canada like it was promised. I'd also like to see the marginal tax rate adjusted with new brackets added scaling up taxes paid for millionaires and billionaires. Bring back the 50's tax rates, it's always struck me as ironic the cons want the 50's social policies where homophobia, racism and misogyny weren't questioned but gloss over how they fundamentally restructured our tax system in the 80's which killed the middle class and caused our debts to balloon.

Beware of people who tell you that they love you, then vote for a political party that doesn't even acknowledge members of your family, friends or community as people.

The indigenous peoples accept that there are multiple genders - they are celebrated, not excluded. Misogyny came to Turle Island in 1492.

Just a friendly reminder.

So when people blame the federal government for being light on crime, one could use the chart above to understand that policing is done at a local/regional level and justice for the most part is provincial.

Mandatory minimums were unconstitutional, cruel and cost prohibitive - eliminating them was appropriate. They lead to more trials, appeals and prison overcrowding.

Poilievre’s decision to support a candidate engaging in residential school denialism is disappointing but not surprising. There is a clear pattern of denialism and anti-Indigenous racism within the Conservative Party of Canada.

Sorry for piling on, but more factual reporting about PP and the conservative party out west. The similarities to the felon of Pierre Poilievre are striking and disqualifying imo. The comments illuminate even more about him.

I spoke at length about this with a lawyer friend.
Basically, mandatory minimums neuter the court system. The judge who is supposed to make the sentence suit the individual crime is uniquely suited to do so, having an intimate knowledge of all relevant aspects of the case.

An example:

Two people are charged with possessing cocaine. Both are caught with less than 3 grams. One is a lifetime criminal who is part of a criminal enterprise and makes his living selling drugs. The second is an 18 year old kid who picked up an 8-ball for a weekend of partying and ends up selling one of his buddies a gram.

Mandatory minimums could see both of those people receiving the same sentence as technically, both are dealers.

Does the kid who made a dumb mistake deserve to be locked up and have his present and future fucked up? Probably not, but shouldn't the judge who tried the case be the one to decide, and not some politician who neither knows or cares about the individual human beings involved nor understands the details of the law?

This Danielle Smith conservative government looks more and more MAGA (corrupt beyond belief) every f*cking day. Seems like they are copying the playbook.
