Canna Coco grow problems.

Hi, do you think these will recover?

I germinated three white widow and one Northern Light Blue in fresh Canna Coco professional plus with 100% success. I first watered the coco with ph 5.8 until run off without any feed as recommended by the instructions on the bag.

On day nine the little things looked healthy and normal so I decided to give them their first feed with Canna Coco A&B nutrients but made a serious mistake having never mixed nutrients before. I gave them a solution of ph 5.8 with an EC of 3.3. (My tap water has an EC of 1.1). About five hours later I realized what I had done so immediately flushed with a bucket each of ph 5.8 water and left them alone for a few more days to let the soil dry a bit.

After that growth really seemed to slow and the first leaves started to look a little yellow.

From day 13 I started feeding them properly with a nutrient EC of 2.1 (1.0 + tap water at 1.1). They have been getting about 1/4 litre per day.

Day 18 the bottom leaves shrivelled up and died. The new growth looks ok but the plants are still tiny.

The picture is from today, day 19 from seed.

They now look very small but relatively healthy. I'm not sure if I burned them or starved them. Any suggestions, tips, help appreciated.

Not much bigger this week and older growth is still yellow. Flushed them thoroughly with tap water yesterday. Run-off was 6.4 ph, last time it was below 5 which I now know may have caused lockout. Will start feeding again in a couple of days when it dries out a bit.

I suspect I should have rinsed out the Canna medium thoroughly before starting. Perhaps started the seedlings some other way. What a load of hassle, I had less problems in soil without all the expense.

i would set the ph to 6.5 to 7.0 hydro likes mid 5 ph i would flush like crazy and see how it responds

1/4 strength to start from day 1 if you want then build up over the next few weeks.............5.5-5.8 is perfect.....you dont need to rinse canna coco before use.....and as someone said they look hungry......

Thanks very much. This is a picture of what they look like today at day 25 from seed. I had to get them out of the tent/house for 24 hrs. Should I start feeding them again now and at what strength, full, half, I only rinsed them last night?

first and foremost, to me ur pots look much to big for a starting seedling...... this causes excess moisture and will prevent rapid root growth and searching of water as all the moisture they need will be there so they dont have much need to expand their root systems.

Also in coco cut ur nutes back, specially if not using a coco spec. nute....... also ph ur nutes at like 5.8-6.2 for coco, on the lower side for flower and higher side for veg.

I see what you are saying. Would never have agreed with something like that until recently when I noticed how much less stretch occurs when the light source is placed closer to seedlings. What method do you recommend to get them started from seed?

This was interesting, I copied it from another forum:

I started 3 NL seeds in small pots and one in a large pot a week or so later.. After a few transplants, the one in the larger pot had impressive growth and caught up to the 3 smaller ones. The problem with this was, each time you transplant you get a growth spurt so the ones i started in smaller pots gradually transplanting into larger ones ended up being the better ones. The one i started in the large pot grow wide and squat and ended up being 1/3 the height of the others.

Wide and squat is perfect for my short tent.

i start mine in 7cm pots then 15 cm pots then 6-10 litre pots.........

Exactly!!! Noob mistake with coco. Coco retains water like a sponge I kid you not. Those seedling roots are not searching for water because your pots are too big!! Coco growers do yourself a favor and always start seedlings & cuttings in a small container something like a plastic party cup ( the ones you play beer ping with) is perfect for the first couple weeks then bam transplant into bigger pot.

Would you still just use coco by itself in the party cups or something different?

They are slowly coming back to life.

Yeah dude just get the cup and fill it with some coco make sure to poke a drain hole at the bottom.

I binned them, after 4/12 weeks they were still tiny and unhealthy looking. I know to start in small pots next time.

Jus got home plants r looking a bit better new grow is starting and bit more of a greenier look to them im guna have a little
trim of the babeys then ill post pics of each one ther is 9 in total thanks ....
