Carbon filter you use?

I have used a phresh with great results in the past but just purchased a Phat. The website by Hydrofarm is well made with a lot of data on it. I feel confident in it. I'll let everyone know what I think of it.

But what are you using? And what has been your best or worst experiences with Carbon Filters?

I use what ever and refill with the same carbon phresh uses. I got a 16 pound box for $80.

I also rebuild them with metal mesh and bake in the oven to refresh. I know it works because the police have been within 50 foot of the exhaust and didn't know.

I got pics somewhere in my thread to prove I rebuilt and baked them.

It stinks bad when you bake them though. It might not work in an apartment complex. I got a free old stove and put it in an out building. I wired it for both oven elements to come on to reach higher temps. 500 degrees for a few hours work. You can drill the rivets out and pour the carbon into turkey pans about an inch deep for quicker cook times.

Also over size your filter as big as you can. Like a 8 inch filter on a 4 inch fan.

I have a 4" carbon filter right now on my 4" fan, but you think it would be effective to put an 8 or 10 inch on my little fan? It's pushing 90cfm for a 50cf grow space. I had assumed you needed a big fan to pull the air through a big filter. If not, great idea. I can get adapters at the hardware store.

I use a speed controller. 8" filters get up in the 6-900cfms. 4" fans pull MAX 200 CFMS. I think you're a bit overkill. 8" filter on a 6" fan is fine.

I've always heard to spray them with a high pressure garden hose til it's clear and then just let it dry in hot direct sunlite. Not taking it out of filter. Does your remove and bake method really work?? And how can you possibly pack it tight enough to make sure there's no open spots where air will take the path of least resistance and bypass your whole carbon bed?

I tap it to settle the carbon. I carefully pile the carbon up to where when I put the lid on it is so tight I can barely put it back together.

That shows the metal I put in instead of the synthetic mesh so I can bake them.

Some will say it don't work. There is a lot of bullshit on growing sites. I did it and it works.

So you're cooking the carbon that's been In a used filter, right? Not the brand new stuff? And are you saying you cut new metal cylinders of the same e diameters as the metal but out of mesh and rebuild with THAT instead?!

Nope. Its never over kill. It doesn't matter that the filter can do 6-900 cfm. the fan will only pull what it can. What that does is spread that load over a larger area. The air moves slower the larger area and has more time to scrub the air. Plus the bigger you go the longer it will last.

I'm glad I bought a speed Controller cause I'm telling ya, it does help to be able to slow the flow.

I don't bake the new stuff. I bake the old. They come with a panty hose like liner in the filter. I only replace the panty hose type stuff so it wont melt in the oven.

Speed controllers kill your fan. It just clips the sine wave and starts and stops it repeatedly. It can cause hums and shortened fan life.

I use a variac that adjusts voltage. Smoother and quieter and easier on the van.IMG_20160525_222441581.jpg
That is the filter from the previous pics.

Think about it. How could a bigger hole suck less air? That all your doing is making many, many more holes for the air to go through.

Its actually easier on the fan.

You're right. I'll be going to a much larger one now.

Thanks for pushing me in a new direction.

Cheers
