Terry Mac1 - This could ultimately work. here are some good online resources that will help you out at making your own activated carbon/charcoal/coal at home.

this first website teaches you to make it, and they also sell it really cheap in different forms.

Now on instructables website, this guy uses the information form the same site, but gives you more of a step-by-step approach.

Now, there will be some difference's, but very little. The store bought activated carbon has a HUGE surface area compared to its size, and could have been made with chemicals to make it more porous to absorb more. The stuff in the tutorials i gave you above, will make good stuff naturally with combustion, and not chemicals. It may not have the biggest surface area, but that's why you break it up, and you may need to change it more frequently. It may also smell like the wood used, but hey you have some nice cherry.

Other than that that is how to go about it DIY fashion.

Good Luck! let me know how it turns out.
