I've just been looking into the DIY side of Carbon filters.

Can charcoal filter it too?
Does it have the same effects?

I looked. It doesn't say a thing about Charcoal..
I just wanted to know if it would have the same effects as Carbon..

if you live in the uk you may not need to make your own. with no smoking in public places. pubs, restaurants and such like will be dumping their filters. it happened in scotland last year and most of the buisnesses i know got rid of them as soon as the next clean up came along. so have a word with your local, friendly land lord and see what he's doing with his.

To answer can you use charcoal to make a carbon filter,No you cant because of how it is made. They bake wood in a steel oven at 1000 degrees to cook off all the organic and gases to get whats left is carbon and ash{minerals). When they make charcoal Briquits they put additives in it to bind it together, Nitrates to ignite it;Lime to whiten the ash so you know when to begin cooking.Carbon use in air scurbbers and filters is bake about three more times in clean ovens. The baking of the carbon opens the pores and through there process oxgen treated carbon. This opens up millions of pores. This is what they call Activated charcoal, which is what in carbon air fitlers and water filters.Hope this puts a little light on charcoal and carbon.PEACE

The cheapest small carbon filter store bought will clean a 10'x10' room for 12 to 18 months.Cost of around $90.00 to $120.00.If you ever worked with charcoal you know how black dirty stuff it is.I may try and build one later sometime, but for now I"ll buy the can filter. Peace

Silica gel could be used as a filter then?

Hmm, i doubt it'd have the same effects as Carbon tho.
Might give it a try.

the only downside to the silica gel is that it doesn't pack tight at all. you may end up getting some whistle action in your growroom.

you can use silica gel kitty litter.

Really? I have not heard that one before...How well does it work? Any links on the topic?
