CFL Homemade Closet Grow

Well if my math is right you should have around 42 Cubic Feet. I don't think those PC fans will be enough to pull the heat out of the grow room due tot he heat out put of the CFLs and the other stuff.

alright, well what if i use a 120 and an 80 to exhaust and the other 120 to intake.. would that be enough outake to cool the room better? any suggestions?

I would not recommend using PC fans because that requires rewiring and use more plugs. The more splicing that you have to do the higher change of a fire can happen. Stick with regular fans and not computer fans.

Alright quick update. I will have to change my room. A LOT. Make it more unnoticable, and quieter. SO ill be getting a last closet storage cabinet and making that the new room. I need advice on making a hydroponic system, quieter. the only loud part is the air pump vibrating, the bubbles from air stone, the water pump vibrating and the water dripping back into the tank from the feeding tubes. the bubbles, and water dripping is the most obvious noises that need dealt with. and the air pump wouldn't vib. if it was hanging, so ill prolly hand it somewhere, away from the sides and any surfaces. what should i do about the water pump though?, it has to stay in the water, so any suggestions???

and for stealthy, ill need to make the cabinet not noticeable at first glance. any suggestions on that as well?? Im short on time with this transitionally project, but IT MUST BE DONE TOMORROW BEFORE 3:00pm central time. THanks for any help.

also just wanted to throw in. Toolage, would the computer fans be able to ventilate a cabinet that is 25-3/4" L x 19" W x 69-1/2" H?

For hydro systems you should always use an air pump so either way you still have to deal with a air pump. BUT only having to deal with an air pump is alot easier because when you have to clean you don't have to take apart tubing to clean it nor have to worry about any mister heads getting plugged.

For that cab. 2 or 3 120mm in. 2 to 3 120mm fans out should be good. 3 to 4 if you wanna be on the safe side for the heat. The intake should be on the bottom to take in the cooler air and the exit at the top but on the other side.

ok update on room. transition went great. cab fits everything great.

DUring the change, they were under little to no light. since seed ive had them on 24/hr. but during this transition, they had no light for 12 hours. reason being, i had to setup in a hurry, just to make the cab usable, but didnt have time to sound test or any of that mess and then ended up leaving so i couldnt put lights on em cuz setup was incomplete.

Like i said everythings good. need to make it a little more soundproof. the pc fans should help a lot with that, i really only hear the heater/fan thats in there and the water pump when its on. nothing major, should be optimal tomorrow. Ill have pic up then. peace

Q: If i am using 2 x 1 gal jugs of spring water, 2 x 1 gal jugs of drinking water, and an extra spring water. when i mix my nutes, in, prolly 160 ml of water, then i add that to my res (1 spring - 1 drinking) will the ph or ppm go off and cause bad effects to plants?

Or: will it be alright as long as im changing the water every week?

Trying to decide on a ph tester and/or a ppm tester, so i kno which ones to get for what i got.

ok So first set of pics are of setup.
IMG_0684[1].jpg

IMG_0685[1].jpg

this is where the intake fan will be, basically in the middle of that box under the tank.
IMG_0686[1].jpg

the exhaust fan will go here. even tho theres no fan now, some air goes through and i gotta keep this cab as cool as possible till i get pc fans.
IMG_0687[1].jpg

I got a blanket around the back and a thin curtain to dampen the sound of everything inside cabinet. And another thick black curtain that supposed to block 99% of light an reduce outside noise, so i figure itll keep it a bit more quiet from the front.
IMG_0697[1].jpg

Here the front curtain down. If it was dark and i put my entertainment rack in front, you would see a thing. and to cover up any extra noise, i could turn on a fan in my room, or turn on a space heater. The light at the top of cab is exhaust duct. thats the ONLY light that you can see when its closes up. The cab even has a hole to put on a padlock if i wanted to.
IMG_0700[1].jpg

The only bad this is that w/o an exhaust and intake fan, and the cab closed up, it gets up to 108!!, it only got to 99 from 84 in 15 min. So defintly need that intake/exhaust fans.

These are shot of the girls

IMG_0688[1].jpg
(Front right) This one was the first to break ground, last friday, 9/28/12 i believe.
IMG_0689[1].jpg IMG_0693[1].jpg IMG_0695[1].jpg

(Back Right) The second to break ground. 9/29/12

(Back Left) Fourth to break 9/30/12 night
IMG_0692[1].jpg

and i have a question. my res capacity is 5 gal. i have 2 gal in it. water level is about half a gal under the 2 gal line. should i put a little more water in now, or wait till thursday when i clean the tank to just add fresh clean water?

1 - If your not running one yet you should be running a air pump.
2 - If you wanna test the sound coming from it and you have a good mic up some ear buds in and use the mic though your computer to hear how well you can hear it using that.
3 - I would run about 3 to 4 gallons of water with an air pump.

Cleaned res today. added another gal to res. its not 3/5 gals instead of 2/5 gals. the water drippig is so much quieter. can still hear vibration of air ston pushing out bubbles, but cant really help that...

added nutes today as well. partial strength, not full. so added 7.5ml of FloraGo, Bloom, and Micro. acutally i accidently added 10 ml of Grow, not paying attention added an extra tsp. but that should hurt too much.... i added those to 200 ml of water befor mixing with res.

Just a couple quick shots.

this is front right (first to break ground)
Decent progress in 3 days, really starting to take off with those nutes.
IMG_0712[1].jpgIMG_0711[1].jpg

This is back right. (second to break)
Tryin to keep up with her day older sister lol.
IMG_0713[1].jpg

These two, are coming in last. i think these two will be a smaller kind of indica, or i just dont have my light close enough. the lights are 4 inches away from these plants. and 2 1/2 in from the other two on the right.
IMG_0714[1].jpg

First. I think the temp is so high cause the light bulb is actuall on the therm. haha, my bad.
2. thats how lights were....
3.how lights are now. Still same distance away from plants just added another bulb, forgot i had another y splitter and just put it on to get a light over each of the plants on the left side. Itll make em spring up by tomo...we'll see. they will
IMG_0716[1].jpg IMG_0717[1].jpg IMG_0718[1].jpg

Got the pc fan. 80mm. the 2 120mm's will be here sometime mon-wed. then ill put a 120 where that 80 is, and the other 120 for intake at bottom. and 80 will be for whatever i need it for. prolly to move air around plants or extra exhaust... opinions??
IMG_0715[1].jpg

hey you all, i have my water pump on a timer, to cut down on extra noise. it comes on every 90 min for 30 min. is that a long enough ON interval for the plants to get as much nutes as possible in my conditions?

So its been 2 day since last update and I checked on the girls today and took pics.

Plant 1 (Front Right)
1. Side pic. plant looks good, except for those 2 little dots on the leaves.
2-3. a top view of plant. Are those spider mites?? Using hydro system. how do get rid of if they are.
4. When i did this w/ finger to get stem shots and let the leaf go normal, the two things fell off into the hydroton. i cant c them on any hydroton pieces.
I hope they dont populate in my rockwool . they were only on this plant.
5. Side shot.
Yea i know its a little burnt on that one leaf, im trying to get the other two on left side to match heights of two on right.

1IMG_0720[1].jpg 2IMG_0721[1].jpg 3IMG_0723[1].jpg 4IMG_0727[1].jpg 5IMG_0729[1].jpg

Plant 2 (Back Right)
1. Top shot. a lil burnt on the top leaf in pic.
2 Leaning a little to the left. Prolly towards the light thats just 45* angle to the right.
3-4.Side shot of stem.
There was nothing on this plant at all.
1IMG_0724[1].jpg 2IMG_0730[1].jpg 3IMG_0731[1].jpg 4IMG_0732[1].jpg

Plant 3 (Front Left)
1. Top shot. Just a little light yellow in the center there. doesnt look to bad tho. I lowered the lights on this plant and plant 4 so they could catch up to __Plants 1 & 2.
2. Looking pretty good. Had to do a bit of manuvouring to get shot 2, 3, 4, but not bad.
3. Pretty good looking stem, and nice forming.
4. Another side shot.
1IMG_0725[1].jpg 2IMG_0734[1].jpg 3IMG_0735[1].jpg 4IMG_0736[1].jpg

Plant 4 (Back Left)
1. Top shot. leaves a little bent towards left. The thermometer fell on this plant. So shes a little hurt.
2. Side shot. Not to bad looking still tho.
3. little further back for focus.
1IMG_0726[1].jpg 2IMG_0738[1].jpg 3IMG_0737[1].jpg

Top shot all....
Top shot of 4 labeled.png Ill be labeling like that now, plant 1, plant 2, 3 , 4.

- Plants 3 and 4, i think they are a bit shorter because i planted them low in the rockwool, so theyre that bit shorter. 2 diff strains thought. just forgot _ didnt label which was which when i planted.

- My 2 120mm fans should be here tomorrow. weren't today because of memorial day. so ill be adding those in as well.
- I think plants 3 and 4 are starting to show after i moved the light lower. ill ahve to keep them about 5-7 inches away from tops of plants. When i first _ open and look at them, i can see little white dots that almost looks like plant is sweating. and ideas on how to resolve? better circulation suggestions??
- When cab is closed its about 103*F with 1 80mm fan as exhaust no intake yet.... Idk if im getting an accurate reading cause how close the therm is __ to the lights...

Q & A:
When can i start lst or top or anything on my plants???

What should i do about whats going on with plant 1?

If i use this light....

....will it be a good add to the 6 cfls i already have. the ones i have now are 23w 100w equaliv for veg. With the added light from the fixture above, would that be a good add for my cab and system? I was thinking i could put 2 of them. 1 on each side of the cab for when plants get taller... Suffestions??

hey all. forget about that grow light. not getting that for sure. was dumb to ask about it....

So heres an update on the girls. They are 17 days old.

I changed the water and nutes on friday. These Pics are from this morning. lights come on at 9 pm and off at 3 pm.

Plant 1
1. That leaf got burnt cause of a light i had hanging with duck tape fell. (TIP, Ducktape does not last long when in direct contact with 120ish degree plastic or bulb. )

2. The little leafs that are from the begin of plant life, the one on the right, has turned brown and ugly, is that ok its like that? or shout i trim it off to use that energy somewhere else??

3. Great looking set of straight roots, white healthy. maybe 3-4 burnt tips....
1IMG_0780[1].jpg 2IMG_0781[1].jpg 3IMG_0793[1].jpg

Plant 2
1. Nice side shot. That leaf on the right is burnt from a light as well. (diff light)
2. Is the labeling right? Trying to figure out when i can top, lst, plants 17 days
3. Nice long roots. mixing a little with the hose and water pump...? Fix?
1IMG_0782[1].jpg 2labeling 1.jpg 3IMG_0797[1].jpg

Plant 3
1. side shot, nothing wrong
2. inside stem, when can i top or lst this...
3. wayyyy short roots, why?? only this one
1IMG_0784[1].jpg 2IMG_0785[1].jpg 3IMG_0794[1].jpg

Plant 4

1. canopy shot
2. stem an node shot

extra
1. Group shot
2. new light setup
3. Top of DIY Light setup. (That light on bottom right, is the one that fell on Plant 1)
4. Plants are about 3-4 inches away from plants. i in their morn so the grow to and move as needed. 3-4 inches away is far enough or to close???
1IMG_0788[1].jpg 2IMG_0790[1].jpg 3IMG_0791[1].jpg 4IMG_0792[1].jpg

ok just a quick update and a few questions.

DAY 18 FROM SPOUT (BREAKTHROUGH)

Plant 1
1. I cut off the two small bottom leaves on this and another plant. they were turning wilted and brown.
2. I have a hook pulling it towards north east direction. (north is back of cab). Why is the tip turning yellow?
1IMG_0801[1].jpg 2IMG_0803[1].jpg

Plant 3
I am lst'ing this plant too. pulling it towards the north west direction. she still has her bottom two leaves.
IMG_0804[1].jpg

Plant 4
I topped this one. im pretty sure i did it at the right spot.
IMG_0805[1].jpg

Plant 2
Topped. I think i might have cut one of the tops off... what will this do?
IMG_0806[1].jpg IMG_0800[1].jpg

Group
They are all kinda short looking to me...are they to soon to be topped?? to late but still want to know. I hear to top when the plant has 3 nodes...but im not entirely sure "what" a node is and looks like for certain..so i just assumed there are 3 or 4 on the plants, look at previous update pics to look at plants stems. I did topping and lst today
IMG_0802[1].jpgIMG_0807[1].jpg

also, im using 9 26w 100w equ. CFLs, they are about 4-6 inches away from tops of plants

alright so Ive been thinking about intake and exhaust. I have 1 120mm fan intake and 1 120 fan as outtake. i just got a small 4in fan. i was wondering, should i switch the exhaust and use the mini fan as exhaust and add that 120 to make another intake. or should i use the mini fan as intake and use the 2 120 fans for exhaust??

DAY 21 From Sprout (Breakthrough)

Just a quick update, doing this update a bit late. I've been busy, didn't have time to upload pics, ext. ext... So....

This is the day i cleaned the tank, swapped the nutes and water.

Group
IMG_0856[1].jpg

P1
Im lst'ing this one and P3. They're doing pretty good. look at the stem growht. they all have a huge stock in my opinion for how old they are.
IMG_0857[1].jpg

P2
Topped this one and P4. I messed up when i topped this one. I didnt FIM it, i actuall cut a stem off, so it grew different. In the next update, here in a few min, this top will get seen better.
IMG_0858[1].jpg

P3
Just a quick pic. LST'ing
IMG_0859[1].jpg

P4
I think this is either 3/4 days light of growth after being topped, or a little shorter then a full days light.
IMG_0860[1].jpg

DAY 26

This is just 3 days after my previous update. Wasnt really much to say about last weeks growth. This week tho...

They look so messed up and ugly, cause i just did some tucking/adjusting/lst fixing.

These are all pictures taken last night, SUNDAY night/Monday Morning

Grow ROOM UPDATE: I put the 4 in personal fan as exhaust, works fairly well... I added some carbon filter to the intake, and double on the exhaust. With that much filter on exhaust, it makes it a little hard to exhaust the room. I guess that fan just isnt powerful enough. I plan on getting 2 x 85w 5000k Maxlight bulbs, and 4 x 40w 2700k ECO Twist CFL bulbs. Ill use prolly 1 x 85w and the 4 x 40w when i switch to flower. but in mean time, when i get the 85's ill take out the 9 x 26w i have, for the 85's and use the 26w wherever i need extra light during veg. how does that sound??.. ill have to make a new light fixture as well, no problem though. Soo, on to the girls...

Group
1IMG_0876[1].jpg 2IMG_0877[1].jpg 3IMG_0888[1].jpg

P1
Great looking stem growth. Its getting lst'd, so those mid and lower branches are getting bigger
IMG_0878[1].jpg

P2
1.Stem Growth all around.
2. 4 days after topping. you can see where it split for the top. the left branch under the topped part was cut off during the topping, i didnt know what would happen or how it would grow, but this is what happen... since it only has that branch on the right side, it leans a bit to the right naturally. Should i leave it, or try and do something with it?
1IMG_0880[1].jpg 2IMG_0881[1].jpg

P3
This lady looks pretty beat right now, haha. She go some serious tucking work along with lst adjustment. When i looked at them 30 min ago, they all look different. Everything's going for the light. the orange thing at bottom are my friskers.... nice and compact, perfect for my tight spaced area.
1IMG_0882[1].jpg 2IMG_0883[1].jpg 3IMG_0884[1].jpg

P4
I also topped this one. I didnt mess this one up tho. as you can see, the top is healthy, and growing great. i tuck and bend a few of the bigger and top fan leaves so the top gets as much light as possible.
1IMG_0885[1].jpg 2IMG_0886[1].jpg 3IMG_0887[1].jpg

Also...Ill be moving in the next day or two...so next update is asaigti. peace, stay floatin'
