So i have heard a few people say not to veg your plants for to long using CFL's because its just to hard to cover all of your plant... So i was wondering if there was like a general time that should be good to veg can you help? 3weeks? 4-5 weeks any ideas?+

Hey I know CFL's get into a bluer range if you get the daylight type... Im guessing these are the best type to use for vegging and clones? Do they put off any amount of Ultra violet light? I am going to be using a 400w MH in a small space and so Ill be using a cooltube. I have heard UV light will make my buds more resinous but that the UV is cancelled out by the cool tube. Is there any other light that will put off UV light that I can use in conjuction with my 400w to give me more resinous buds? will 1 or 2, 23watt cfl's add any UV light?

Reptiglo 10.0... it has 10x the normal UVB output of sunlight, one or two would be good to supplement a few plants through flowering. Resin is the plants natural sunscreen to protect aginst UV light. UVC is carcinogenic/germicidal and will destroy plant and animal cell structures, UVB is pretty strong and can cause sunburn and flash blindness, UVA is just a touch under blacklight, but out of human perception. UVB is what will trigger the resin production, giving you stickier icky :-)

13 and 26 watts, reptiglo 2.0 has 2x, 5.0 has 5x and 10.0 has ten times UVB of sunlight and otherwise appears like a regular 6500k. All fluorescent lights are essentially UV lights, UV light is created by exciting the mercury inside, which hits the phosphor coating inside the tube which then emits the blend of colors that creates the light seen as a Kelvin temp, orangeish 2700k has more red wavelengths and less blue... due to the phosphor coating which both BLOCKS the dangerous UV light, and then transforms it into the visible spectrum emitted that we see. The reptiglo bulbs simply have a phosphor coating that does not block the UVB wavelengths needed by creepy lizzards and the like. but it also works nicely in with a CFL grow :-) I'd reccommend adding one to the top of each plant for the best spread/coverage and then monitoing for overexposure/sunburn/bleaching. They also come in a 24" tube you can add to the sides in a grow box.

I did just find this... might just put a reptile light in there.. probably wont burn more than 100watts

Wow I just scrolled down to see your next post and read the link. LMFAO I swear I didnt read the article then re-hash it back at you lol. but pretty much the same info from 10yrs ago.

I WILL argue however, even with Ed Rosenthal...gods gift to pot himself... that he says he grows for quality not quantity and he (and his homies) think MH lamps will grow plants with longer lasting stonier highs than HPS... However, a plants stony characteristics are pre-determined by its genetics. You wont have to smoke as much to get high if your bowls are packed with sticky icky crystally resin buds, but it wont last any longer or make you energetic if the same plant would have otherwise made you couchlock if grown without the UV. In other words, you cannot change the characteristics of your bud, you can just make it so you dont have to smoke as much to get the same effect.

I agree with you; however, some plants can be manipulated by harvest time to produce a higher effect vs. a stonier effect, but I do agree that the UV penetration isn't going to change that. Some strains will lend a headier high if harvested when the trichs are still mostly clear and cloudy with no amber, but resort to a couchlock condition as the resin matures into the amber trichs.

My understanding of UV benefits are that it will make the plant more of whatever it was going to be in the first place...just like CO2...doesn't change the plant itself, just assists in what it was doing to begin with.

True true true, forgot about that. That will tweak the pre-determined characteristics abit, but the overall traits (desirable for Med use, like appetite stimulation or pain relief) are set by the genetics. But you're right that the harvest time in relation to the trich's being clear/opaque/amber will effect some of the effects.

good call

base your decision on size and shape of plant, not by time. when you go to 12/12, you're gonna get a big stretch from your girls, so you have to plan for that.

Hello all

I am currently using a old refrigrator for my grow and i have questions? 1st how should i place the lights in my grow to maximize harvest. 2nd will 11 CFL's be good or do i need more. 3rd if i SCROG should i wait 2 more weeks to flower. 4th is 16070 lumens good for a 24"x28"x50"

theses are my pics any infor you can give would be a great I am currently keeping the lights 3.5" to 4" from the plants

dude this seems really outrageous. Cfl's are for small time growers who want a couple of plants in a small space. They aren't planning on having a 5 foot tree in their tiny closet!!

I'm using 400 actual watts as *supplemental lighting only. I realize people do full successful grows using solely CFL's, but I prefer adding real UV rays to the mix. I could grow 5 foot trees with solely those lights, but I have a feeling if I tried it would result in lower % of THC etc.

Getting ready to get a CMH light. Pretty excited about it...started with CFLs then got a 400w...Don't have to have that near the plant...but I try to...lol

Hello,You've bought up a Hot Topic and THANKYOU! I've used my 6 Artist's lights (20 watts)=132 watts in a pinch.I try to keep it simple ,but
for Optimum N.Y.sour D,large & tight buds...we've used 9 new digital 750's,and dial down to 400 for veggin(3 weeks) - 60 HONKIN plants,so 1000 watts is not a necessity- at 3 wks.=32" plants from coco up.7-8 weeks later = 1.25lbs each;no exceptions.
Are 40 Watt Fl. Plant & Aquarium Fluor.Bulbs good for Moms & Clones,I've got Blue Spectrum T-5's(4 bulbs),and T-8's(4 bulbs),in my closet clone/Mom space......a person gave me 5 sets of the 40 watt bulbs, mentioned above....would the plants benefit from using these, also?
Clones are off the hook in 8 days and I'll know about the Mom's,in 2-3 weeks.
Sounds like You really know your plants needs, and mucho about electrical lighting-look forward to learning! THANKYOU,kcheetah
