Why has no one said yet that watts don't matter. IF the HID ballast output is 120V then the only thing you've got to worry about is running two ballasts. If the CFL has a self-ballast then just disconnect the HID ballast and run straight to the socket. Wattage really doesn't matter if the voltage is the same. The 300W bulb will just pull fewer amps than the 400W HID would.

What makes you the think the output of a hid ballast is 120 v? what do you think every body is freaking about its thousand of volts at low current if the cfl has its own ballast its gonna burn up .

And wattage does matter you cant go bigger for example a 400w ballast can light a 250 but not a 600 !

QUIT FUCKIN WITH THE ELECTRICIAN 18 YRS !

Thousands of volts? I thought they ranged from 115V - 277V?

What I said was if the CFL is NOT self-ballasted then it shouldn't be much of an issue if the voltages match. And again, watts in this case don't really matter, what you're looking at is if the voltages match and how many amps the ballast can push. Of course you can't run a 600W lamp off a 400W ballast, the lamp will be pulling more current than the ballast can push.

Thats funny because he never said it was a ballasted cfl .Does anybody read ? I got a 250 in 400 watt parking lot light been burning over a year . I speak from experiance . So i, m assuming you have actually seen a one blow up from this reason only ? I bet not .

sure post a rare bulb that nobody would use anyways. how many time you fonna say your done but keep running that mouth...and no im not a kid...almost 50 here son

I'm not at the place the grow op is at the moment so I can't get brands ect. but I can say some things.

To everyone one saying the 300 Watt CFL is not actually 300 Watts but is the equivalent is wrong. Yes I know how a CFL works, an 11 Watt CFL will produce the equivalent light output as a X Watt Incandescent bulb, but this is actually a 300 Watt Bulb, it is huge.

Secondly, the connector at the base of the CFL bulb is the same as that of an HPS bulb and screws nicely into the mogul socket fitted onto to reflector. I have turned it on and off a few times now and it seems to be completely fine. I'm no electrical engineer but it seems a few of you over reacted :)

Imagine a normal HPS set up: X Watt HPS Bulb, Correct Ballast, Contactor.

Now just substitute the HPS with a CFL and that is it.

I would like a professional persons advice please.
