I got a 65 watt cfl with the large base from home depot and i bought a mogul from an eletrical store. i wired up the mogul with a power cord vut the end off and connected the two wires. i screwed in the cfl but it wont light. do i need some kind of ballast to make the large cfl's light up?

thanks

Ewwww bad way to do this. Go back to Home depot and get one of the converters from normal A/C power to light bulb (similar to mogul but it plugs into a socket vs having wires) that way we arent splicing wires together without knowing volts and amps and such.

Thats what im using in my grow and i simply get little extension cords and hang the lights over the plants. (link below)

if u dont have a built in ballast then yes u have to buy a fixture and if u got it at home depot it doesnt have one
and is there a reason u r hanging your bulbs vert instead of horizontal with reflectors

No After looking closely at it I noticed it doesnt say self ballasting on it so i pretty much think it wont light without one. Probally going to set it aside for awhile. I found a set up at lowes that includes everything including bulb for 30 bucks. if any one has a ballast for it 15 bucks for bulb and mogul with a cord.
