cfls dangerous?

everyone knows they have mercury in them so when broken they can be hazardous to our health. but check this out

Another everyday product you may want to avoid is compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). Only months after it was found that energy saving compact fluorescent bulbs release carcinogenic chemicals into the air, a new study has found that these harmful chemicals are continually released from the bulbs over a period of weeks to months. Furthermore, the study also found that the levels of mercury released exceed those that are considered safe for humans.

if you had cfls in a box would the chemicals effect the plants? or will they effect you when you smoke the plant? and what do people mean when they say cfls are "dirty" energy. and what does "clean" energy mean

I read recently a CFL bulb contains less mercury than a can of tuna....

I'll have to find the source... I'm just about out the door though so I'll sub this and try and find it tomorrow....(could've been some bullshit).

Yup, that's what I understand as well. They have very little mercury in them. It is recommended you don't vacuum up a broken CFL, however...

======================

Ah, I see what OP is on about. Had to dig a little to find it. This bears watching and needs to be peer reviewed before I come to any conclusions.

Fears have been reignited about the safety of energy saving light bulbs after a group of scientists warned that they contain cancer causing chemicals.

Their report advises that the bulbs should not be left on for extended periods, particularly near someone’s head, as they emit poisonous materials when switched on.
Peter Braun, who carried out the tests at the Berlin’s Alab Laboratory, said: “For such carcinogenic substances it is important they are kept as far away as possible from the human environment.”
The bulbs are already widely used in the UK following EU direction to phase out traditional incandescent lighting by the end of this year.
But the German scientists claimed that several carcinogenic chemicals and toxins were released when the environmentally-friendly compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) were switched on, including phenol, naphthalene and styrene.
Andreas Kirchner, of the Federation of German Engineers, said: “Electrical smog develops around these lamps.
“I, therefore, use them only very economically. They should not be used in unventilated areas and definitely not in the proximity of the head.”
British experts insisted that more research was needed and urged consumers not to panic.
Dr Michelle Bloor, senior lecturer in Environmental Science at Portsmouth University, told the Daily Express: “Further independent studies would need to be undertaken to back up the presented German research.”
The Department for the Environment insists the bulbs are safe, despite the fact that they contain small amounts of mercury which would leak out if the glass was broken.
Advice on its website states: “Energy efficient light bulbs are not a danger to the public.
“Although they contain mercury, limited at 5mg per lamp, it cannot escape from a lamp that is intact.
“In any case, the very small amount contained in an energy efficient bulb is unlikely to cause harm even if the lamp should be broken.”
The latest report follows claims by Abraham Haim, a professor of biology at Haifa University in Israel, that the bulbs could result in higher breast cancer rates if used late at night.
He said that the bluer light that CFLs emitted closely mimicked daylight, disrupting the body’s production of the hormone melatonin more than older-style filament bulbs, which cast a yellower light.
The Migraine Action Association has warned that they could trigger migraines and skin care specialists have claimed that their intense light could exacerbate a range of existing skin problems.

Something is fishy about this.

That report from naturalsociety is over 11 months old. If this were true, it would be causing an uproar across the first world by now. I'll keep looking for more...

That is what i thought too... let me know if you find more reports of this...

i wasnt to worried about the mercury except when they break. but there are other chemicals that are released. idk what they are called could be the ones mentioned above

its all up to the media which is run by the government and mostly big business. people have been saying that cfls are "dirty" engery for a while but no big news talks about it. it would jepordies a company and a big industry for them

That article really doesn't sound like much to worry about. A lot of could and woulds but nothing of much substance the way I see it. Especially consider there's no link to this "report" of theirs. Doesn't say who funded this report either, which can be pretty important when considering these types of things. Gonna hold of on ditching all my CFLs, for now.

yeah me ether haha im gonna keep mine just wondering about them. i read about the dirty energy/electricity and it says that people suffer from headaches and ringing in the ears. my girl gets head aches often. and my ears ring sometimes but maybe cause im so high haha but it also says that schools that had "dirty enegry" lights the teachers and students there got sick more often then other school or the year before. its apparently a health harazrd

Some of those health problems being attributed to electrical pollution include fibromyalgia, attention deficit disorder, asthma, chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetes, and asthma.

-I've found this story repeated hundreds of times in small and online media.

-I've found nothing debunking or protesting the findings.

-I've found no peer review done of the study.

-I've found nothing else (in english) that Berlin's Alab Labratory or Peter Braun has done or is known for other than this study

Here is the website for the place. Looks legitimate. 8 employees?

There is more than 10x more mercury in a tuna steak than in a CFL... and you EAT the tuna steak...

Have you googled those chemicals? Phenols for instance are used in making nylon, drugs, other pharmaceuticals, detergent... So you eat it, wear it, wash with it, and use it to cure other things... sounds pretty terrible. I'll start to worry when I see concern from a legitimate source. Haven't read it in JAMA yet...

Now burning candles and smoking pot... that puts some pretty nasty stuff in the air.
