Clay pellets on top of soil?

I heard and am running clay pellets on top of my soil in the pot. I heard it will lock in moisture better while also allowing roots to grow all over under that clay. Or is this a bad idea?

I don't see where it would have too many benefits, but also don't see where it would have many disadvantages. I always have roots near the surface of my soil without using hydroton, but I transplant a few times to take advantage off all of my soil. Be careful with restricting evaporation in your soil, you don't want to keep it waterlogged. Make sure you have adequate drainage.

Just a friendly warning, be wary of trying out things that you hear, especially a lot of the things on these forums. Do adequate research before implementing things to your grow. Good luck :eyesmoke:

Yeh I used to do this, it does help to keep moisture in, whilst still allowing it to evaporate and move about. Your surface roots will be in the dark, so they will grow.

I only stopped doing it because the little bastard fungus gnats love a damp soil surface to lay their (many) eggs, but if you can keep on top of that problem, then it does help keep your soil moisture more stable...
