cleaning ph meter probe

what can I use to clean my ph meter probe,other than the stuff they sell to clean them.can I just use soap and hot water.I dont want to ruin the probe by useing the wronge stuff but there has to be something around the house that I can use to clean it.thanks

I've used a soft toothbrush before and I make sure to rinse with tap water really well after each use. Sometimes I even store it in the pH 7.0 solution.
