Sounds like algae or something..
Make sure there is No Light leaks whatsover in the res, or havoc will come into effect.
Also, extreme rez temps can screw things up too.. especially if your using organic nutes.

All the advice these nice people have given you is great, and can solve problems, but honestly you should make a much better effort to describe your problem, so that a simple solution can be given instead of 10 solutions.
You haven't told us your nutes, your temperatures, your container, your frigging anything. Your problem could be, just off the top of my head: Algae, bacteria, mold, nutrient buildup, enzymes coating the roots, and the list goes on. And maybe... just maybe... some pictures?
I wish people who are asking for help would at least do their part.

You might look into using Hydrogen Peroxide into your mix .... this works for me. It actually gives the roots extra oxygen and it kills that slimy shit that likes to grow on your roots.
And do make sure that your reservoir has no light leaks as this triggers the ale growth.
As for H202 .... mix that to my water .... 5ml to a gallon ..... let it sit .... then I add my nutes .... then PH.

I wouldnt reccomend flora shield, bad consequences may follow.
Dont use peroxide if your growing with organics... you'll kill em.

as closet said tho nt to be used wit organics, but i use wit gh flora and its fine u can also use hygrozyme as well wit h202 ,, it will promote new roots and decompose dead ones gd luck

stop using h202 and go to plant success .com and order some great white, it will cure your shit right up check out the research on their website.... hell the history channel did a show just on this shit working so good that farmers who used it got a 20% more yeild, its mycorrhizal bacteria that eats all the bad stuff and poops it out as nutes for your plant...I had the exact same shit haunting my res for weeks till i found this stuff...

U can't use great white with chemical nuts from what I understand and h202 actually not only kills shit but also ads oxygen to the water.
Yes I bubble ... and add other secondary additives with my nutes ... which are chem friendly .... !!
So it all depends on your style of grow.
I just thought I would add this .... so people can understand H202. And correct me if I am wrong !

Just to throw this out there, as I honestly have no idea why this happens, but it could just be a property of your water. I live in Southeast Colorado, and much of our water is from wells. I have lived in quite a few places here, where the water seems to just naturally turn to slime when exposed to air. I know this sounds weird, and it doesn't do it in soil, or closed containers, but a mop bucket, sink of dishes, dog's water, etc. just seem to turn to slime after a while. Clear slime no change in odor, no strange flavor, just kind of gross. Plants in garden as well as house plants do fine, and I have used this water to produce some wonderful gardens. Just a weird story I thought you all might enjoy.

stumps i just started using it this time around about month and a half ago, im pretty sure the slime problem was pineapple rush that i was using, so i gave it to my buddy, but you should go to plantsuccess.com and check out the great white it is good stuff, they got the award for biggest outdoor plant of the year last year, farmers use the stuff all the time, but since i put it in my roots are going crazy, my plants were barely 4 or 5 inches tall and the roots in the res were 10 or 12 inches already!!! killer roots for killer plants http://www.plant-success.com/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZKexZlmuDw&feature=player_embedded

trade secret ??
I would be willing to experiment in one of my buckets just to see and compare side by side ... but I love to know of the content cause that is how I roll !

You can too use H2O2. It kills things for sure, good and bad, but the good microbes will come back quick, and as long as you get your other rez conditions (temps, light leaks, etc) straightened out, the bad guys should stay at bay. Obviously, different concentrations of H202 in the rez will have varying strength, thus varying microbe reduction. This I know from personal experience. Right now I have 4 different types of organic hydro setups going (2 DWC [one for MJ, other for tomato], one Flood & Drain table [herbs and small leafy greens], and one outdoor Flood & Drain NFT [strawberries]) and I use H2O2 periodically to help reduce the number of rez changes (every few weeks), and to clean funky junk, which I've gotten a couple times in my outdoor hydro setup and once in my first DWC bucket (MJ). H202 is only active for 24 hours or so before it breaks down.
You definitely dont want to use it the majority of the time, but it does the trick when you're in need to clean out some junk.

I'll tell you what I'm trying that I think is a good way to go with organics... after cleaning out the rez pretty good with 35% H2O2 (I use 5ml/gal to clean), I just recently added mycorrhizae inoculant to all my systems and since then I haven't had any problems... even when I probably should have, like with my outdoor strawberries. They grow in tubes that can get pretty hot on the inside of them if temps outside are hot (I live in the south) and has had 3 cases of black slime and other gook, which has rotted some of my roots away each time. I've read that mycorrhizae help to keep a good microbial balance. I put it in a little over a week ago and not only do plants enjoy the relationship, but so far the roots look really healthy with no funka munk. But you should still try to get your rez temps down, if high temps are your problem. I wrap mine (MJ DWC) in two layers of bubble wrap and then mylar, foil taped down.

I have been slimed before and nothing cures this except for sterilizing everything. Put a few drops of Physan 20 in your bucket for a few hours and then take the net pot out and run cold water over the roots and get all the slime off. Clean the bucket thoroughly and even the side of the net pot. Clean everything. Miss a spot and it will come back. Make a new nute mix and leave out the organics. Also Pineapple Rush or even Flora Nectar does not cause the slime. I used GH line before with Great White and did a test to see what caused it. The culprit was Bio Root by General Organics. Remember clean everything really good or it will come back. I had 2 buckets with slime and I thought I cleaned everything really good. Made my nute mix without the Bio Root and it came back. Then I left all the additives out except the 3 part and it came back. I then thoroughly sterilized the system and cleaned off the roots again and made the 3 part nute mix and slime was gone. At this point I was scared to add any additives because I was unsure which one caused the slime so every 4 hours I added an additive in. I saved the Bio Root for last because I was pretty sure that is what caused it since it was the only organic additive I had. On one of the buckets I decided to add Bio Root and sure enough the slime came back. But no biggie cause now I knew exactly how to fix it. Sterilize everything and stay away from organics in DWC.
