Subcool addresses this topic in "Weed Nerd", episode 54. they'll burn up in direct sun, like vampires

nah ahh...I have never grown MJ outside, but I have grown and messed up any manner of other plants, and have a really close friend that grows out of doors, and I have always found you can take a plant outside in it's pot everyday and it won't burn up...now if when you transplant you tear a good many roots--- that is where it gets tricky...because the sun beating down on them and them without their proper roots...all you have to do is after you transplant if it seemed like it might have been hard on the roots, just pluck off a few under leaves...whatever bigger older leaves that aren't the only ones on top...keeps the plant from stressing while the roots heal and grow in...but if you tear roots and then leave a plant there without doing anything for it, it is likely to just wither up...Unless mj is terribly different than any other plant you might transplant outside...
