It is possible to clone directly in dirt with just a cutting, but very unlikely to work unless done under ideal conditions. Never, in my experience.
Always use rooting gel if you can get it.
I've had the most success starting in saturated rockwool plugs in a covered tray with a small level of water or nutes, which gives a good balance of water and oxygen to the roots or open cut. I've not tried more advanced methods, but this seems to work for even very small clones like 2". Where it is possible to make clones this small root, the growth is delayed somewhat compared to larger cuts.
I always sex my (seed) plants before cloning, either by preflowering indicators or forcing a 12/12 from seed or very soon after. I consider my plants from seed to be test plants and I'm not concerned about stress, yield, etc, so flowering them small is no problem. I've been told that taking cuts from a flowering plant is a more stressful way to clone, but I've not had any issues. Just don't let them get too far into flowering before cutting.

has anybody used "Roots" by Wilson? I just picked some up and will be cutting some clones shortly. Would it work if I cut a clone, dipped it in rooting gel and put it in a seed pod from an aerogarden + kept that in a shot glass half full of water + kept it humid?

i wouldnt recommend cloning without some kind of rooting hormone, like a gel or powder. its hard enough sometimes to get a plant to clone itself. some ppl clone in water, then you dont need a gel or powder. i believe you can buy some gel at one of those stores, i know Walmart has it too..gl

I've put the clones in dirt and they took, but only when I grab from a really healthy branch. If I use the rooting hormone, even small branches take. Its just easier. I try to grow organic as much as I can, but I don't even think twice about the rooting hormone.

I heard you can find organic rooting hormones made from willow trees. I haven't seen it in any local stores, so you'd have to look online or see if a nursery had it. Its an option, but I wouldn't even worry or go through the extra expense. I think the name is scarier then the product. "giving plants hormones" yeah that shit does sound a little weird. lol.

I'm using some powder shit. Its been working so I'll keep using it. Although as soon as I come across the gel kind I'll probably pick that up.
