Closet Grow-Op Items List

My wife was diagnosed with glaucoma and has had several surgeries to release pressure in her eyes. Marijuana has helped her a lot with this issue and I would like to help her by growing some medical marijuana for her. But I have never attempted to do something like this before so I did some research online and came up with an items list of things I think I’m going to need. I would like some suggestions on weather I am getting the right things for this closet grow room.

Seeds
400 Watt HPS Grow Light
Carbon Air Filter
10” Fan
Light Timer
5 Gallon Buckets
Perlite
Soilless Potting Mix
Fertilizer
PH Test Kit
PH Up/Down
Thermometer
Hydrometer

I also have a few questions if anyone would care to answer them for me.

1: Should I line the inside of the closet with black/white plastic?
2: How well does the carbon air filter’s work?
3: Will it completely eliminate any odors?
4: What nutrients do I need and work the best?
5: What is the best way to intake and exhaust air out of a closet? Without cutting holes in the wall or door.

Is there anything that I am overlooking that I will need to get? Or any suggestions on my approach to making a closet grow room would be much appreciated.

White reflects light, black doesnt. USe white for the growwroom.

3: Will it completely eliminate any odors?
4: What nutrients do I need and work the best?
I use fish emulsion for nitrogen, and fox farm big bloom for the rest.
5: What is the best way to intake and exhaust air out of a closet? Without cutting holes in the wall or door.

Since you are new, I will ask you some questions. You are using 5 gallon buckets in a closet, exactly how big are you wanting your plants? I use 1/2 gallon-1 gallon depending on how big i want my plants. They are 2 ft tall at harvest. Think about size before you setup.
Good luck to you and your wife.I realize i didnt answer all of your questions, if any, but hopefully someone will.

Looks good, except you might end up needing a humidifier. Those are fairly cheap and you can pick one up at Wal-Mart. I think they are either quart sized or a little bigger. Water should last 8 hours or so before needing to be filled again.

Don't start your seeds out in those big pots - at least that's the way I learned. I think they need smaller sized pots starting out to establish a good root system. Something like some 16 oz dixie cups works great. Transplant at around 3 weeks to their final 5 gallon pots.

What kind of fertilizer will you be using?

What type of potting mix?

The carbon air filter works as good as it's built. If that makes any sense? You shouldn't need this until 3 weeks or so into flowering. Most soil grows don't seem to get as smelly as hydro - so I've read. Mine hasn't had any smell at all yet.

I prefer organic nutrients. You will need different fertilizers at different stages of growth. Something high in N will be good for the first stage - VEGGING.

Something high in P and K you will want to use during the flowering cycle. P helps promote the budding of the plants.

Make sure you keep you PH right. Get that wrong and the plants will die a slow and miserable death.

I was going to hold off on the humidifier until I saw a need for it. Or is that a bad idea? Should I just go and get it anyway? I was going to get small pots to start off my plants but the dixie cups are a good idea, thanks. As for the fertilizer I'm not sure what to use. Or what would be the best to use. The potting mix I was going to get at Wal*mart. So whatever they have to offer is what I was going to go with. What brand of nutrients would you recommend that have high P and K? As for the PH, I have a salt water fish tank so I have had experience with PH levels and I will check them often.

Hey Jahred,

What you're going to need depends a lot on your space. One thing I would urge you to do before buying anything is measure everything in your space. Make a top view, and an elevation sketch of your space, to scale, on graph paper.
Bring that into the hydro shop with you, if you have one nearby, or post the sketch here, and ask for specific fans, filters, lights, fixtures, bulbs, ballasts, and nutrients people have had good luck with. Also, what your budgeting roughly for this project might also help us to give you good advice. Get measurements for everything you think you're going to put in there, and sketch the measurements in top and elevation onto another sheet of graph paper.

Once you have both sketches, make little cutouts with the graph paper of the measurements of everything you want to cram in the space and place them on the sketches of the space. Paper is lighter then moving a 50lb charcoal filter a hundred times, believe me. I speak from experience.:peace:

Once you're happy where everything is on the sketch, then purchase and assemble. This will save you a lot of time, money, and frustration. Planning is everything.

To answer your question about the film to coat the closet walls with, they make poly film that's white on one side, and black on the other. White reflects more light than foil, and the black on the other side is anti-fungal.

There is a GREAT video by Jorge Cervantes called the Ultimate Grow DVD. Buy it or download it, and watch it before you get started. I wish I had. It's got some great advice and has step by step instructions from seed to harvest.

I'm in the middle of my first indoor hydro grow myself(
I crammed a four pod water farm with a 600W lamp into a space that's 16'x48'x108'), and I tell you it's a little intimidating to approach, but once you get into the swing of things, it's pretty smooth sailing.

Feel free to PM me if you have any Questions.

Tin foil is not a good idea. It will cause much higher temperatures. I started with that, but now my walls are white, and my temps are 10-15 degrees cooler. Probably the poly sheets are the best.

Good people of rollitup!

DO NOT USE TINFOIL IN YOUR GROW!!!

White "Panda" film is MUCH more reflective then foil. Additionally, when foil absorbs the light white film would have reflected, it produces heat. Since this is the internets, and you likely dont know d0z3r in real life, d0z3r suggests an experiment. Take a piece of plain, white paper, and a piece of foil, and set both outside in direct sunlight. Gaze on your creations, one at a time. Your eyes should strain looking at the paper, not so the foil. Wait 30 mins, place either hand on foil and paper. Which is hotter?

This concludes my post.

Instead of white or black plastic, you should use tinfoil so it reflects the light better than the white or black plastic.
