Co worker fired for “causing TMV”

Long story short, former soldier, one of the hardest worker older gentlemen I’ve ever met in my life, full of integrity, wouldn’t tell a lie, co workers was fired today from a commercial op after “TMV was found and he was the only chewing tobacco user in the facility”

This man chews in his car and never has brought any inside. I know he hasn’t because he said he never has done so, he doesn’t lie. One of the nicest hardest working men I’ve ever met in my life. I don’t know why they’d want to get rid of him, seems the “blame” had to be pointed at someone, and they automatically assumed it had to be him.

I’ve been bothered by this all day. This maneat slept and breathed his job. Dude wasn’t licking the plants with his chew mouth. Wasn’t using in the production areas.

What are the odds of a person causing TMV into cannabis by maybe… a fraction of chew spit…. On his hands?

We have to wash our hands immediately into entering the production facility. And wear gloves. This seems like the blame game getting put onto anyone they could find and it sucks man.

Kinda venting but man I just think this is unlikely the guy caused TMV. It was only on “two plants”

What the fuck?

It's very rare, how did they definitively diagnose it?

The integrated pest management guy got a machine about a month ago to test for viruses, couple thousand per test or whatever he said. Someone allegedly found “chewing tobacco” on a leaf yesterday, looked at it under the scope, said it “looks like chewing tobacco” and dude wasn’t even there yesterday. He was on PTO. I can’t confirm anything was even definitively found. To me, it looked like a chunk of some weird coco. It might’ve been chew, but it wasn’t even 24 hours from the find and dude was gone. Not even enough time to send in a “test”

The whole crew is in disbelief. Again, nicest guy we ever had in the company.

Sounds like bs.

He probably made more $ than the younger guys. That's usually why older guys get fired & then replaced by young folks. Older people also present a threat to Healthcare costs, yet another reason to ditch em. Especially tobacco users.

He might have just looked at the Boss wrong one morning. They wanted him gone, he's gone. They don't give AF about peoples lives/children/housing.

I dip 2 cans a day and dip while I'm watering and tending the plants. In 5 years of continuous growing I've never seen TMV or anything that looks like it. With all the processing that smokeless tobacco goes through I'd think it would be hard for any virus to survive. I am religious about washing my hands and changing into different clothes before I go in the grow room. Sounds like they wanted the guy gone and had to come up with a reason so they don't have to pay him unemployment. I'd be looking for a better grow op in the future if it was me. Unethical shit like that is rarely isolated to just one instance.

Go into business with him. All you need is a few seeds and dirt.

And a business plan to present to investors.

More specialized ag and lab testers focused on cannabis questioned about tmv more I hear in recent years I also hear they always say they don’t even think tmv In a concern in cannabis because they never see any infected results over other things. It’s not hplvd , i don’t know the names but the hplvd labs in a few podcast I think said there’s well over 5 known for cannabis and tmv was least of concerns

I've smoked and dipped around plants for years and never had a problem. Even when I was growing night shade varieties I never had a problem. I'd actually make a pest spray with old butts, essential oils, and soap to spray around the garden and never had any issues. Fuck I'm glad I don't have to deal with that kind of bullshit anymore.

It is called TMV because it was first discovered on tobacco leaves. It can also be on tomatoes peppers and all kinds of vegetables and ornamental plants. Anyone could have brought it in. It only spreads through direct contact. Unfortunately for your friend, most states are “at will” when it comes to employment. Just like you can walk at any moment, the company can fire you for anything or no reason at all. The protected classes remain that you can’t be discriminated for your sex, religion etc however even if you are disabled, as long as they don’t say- we are firing you because you are disabled- or because you are Catholic, you can still be let go at any time for any reason in an at will work State.

If it wasn't in the contract that he couldn't consume tobacco then he's screwed but otherwise he has a lawsuit because Tobacco mosaic virus can be transmitted to plants from bugs, materials brought into facility unrelated to employees.

I'm tired of people getting screwed like this. Hopefully they resolve the TMV and get incurable mites and powdery mildew.

I've heard a lot of TMV but in a few ops I worked at, the guys literally all smoked those huge tobacco leaves cut into little blunts and they never had any signs of TMV with 100+ plants. I have personally never witnessed TMV in person.. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Maybe someone sabotaged on purpose?
