COB diy clu048

Some years ago i started with CL tubes.
This changed to HPS.
Then i stopped for some years with growing and after turning back to this nice hobby..
I popped in the world of led, bought some old leds that where supposed to do great in the past.
But it seems that they aren't that great and efficient anymore.
Currently i have also 2viparspectra R900, good for 800watts and altough they are cheap and chinese, i like those so far. They show better results then my other old leds.
But since i have also a smaller 1x1m tent. I'm willing to change those to cob's.
So after some days of researching i think i'm going for this ;
5x clue048 1212 3500k
5x solderless holder for it.
1x MW HLG 240H C1400B
= around 140$ inclusive shipment i guess. I'm waiting on the shipment price.

What i need more ;
Wago's 5$
Thermal tape 3$ ( is alu tape good enough ? )
Potentiometer 100k 3$

I won't be using those lenses or shining things.
Wirings and screws i have already so shouldn't be a problem.
If needed i have soldery equipment but rather don't use it.

The diy kit 250w from kingbrite was 243$ inclusive shipment for everything + reflectors and wirings etc + heatsinks. But i think because of the heatsinks the shipment is so expensive so i want to cut those costs.

So today i'll be looking for alternatives for those heatsinks.
Yesterday i already looked trough alibaba, ebay, amazon, other sites and didn't found a cheaper passive cooling solution so i will probably aim for active cooling with a smaller heatsink.
My aim is about 20-30$ for 5 elements.

Now i'm still wondering if 250watts divided by 5 cobs will be sufficient for a 1x1m grow tent.
I would place them likes this
--x----x--
---- x ----
--x----x--

Reason for cob -> efficience and less heat i hope and also better results then my current chinese crap.
Reason for diy -> i like doing those small projects altough i'm not really good at it, i think its fun to see results.

So if any advice , feel free to help my on the way :)
And afcorse if i'm happy with this, then i make one also for the bigger tent.

I agree completely, you want 6 cobs and 300w at least for better spread. 2 rows.

Id just bite the bullet on heatsinks. Pinfin heatsinks works better than most other and having the sinks prepared with guaranteed the right spaced/size holes is a great alternative to drilling and taping yourself for screws.

Also your passive pinf heatsink will last forever and wont need power or make noise.

Thanks for the input.
I'm having a spectrabox laying in here that has 2 drivers for 3 fans each. So i was thinking on using that one.

On the other side, think i'm going to follow you guys advice this time.
You both probably know it better then i do and i don't want to change things after i notice i had better followed you.
Sometimes it's better to pay a bit more, to get more and pay less in the end.
I asked the quota for the diy 300w Kit shipment and will just buy it lol.

Ask jerry to mark your invoice at a lower price, save you some import duty and taxes.
Also don't be afraid to ask for a discount. They expect you to haggle a bit.

Yes , after doing research the 1212 seemed a good option.
The vero & cxb are more expensive so i'd rather skip those if not needed ;)

I'm from Europe indeed.
I've read some posts about orders that didn't had to pay those taxes so that's what i'm hoping at.
Also said i got in touch from Rollitup. And that i'm just ordering a sample and wanted to know prices too for 200/500/1000 kits :p lolol ( i always say things like that on alibaba, sometimes free sample)

9 Days later ..

Was fun to build. Shipment was very fast.
Total for the 300w 287€
Duty fees were only 35€
+ 30€ for the frame
= 352€

Some things could be done better afcorse, but i don't have the materials for that.
I had to make it on my dinner table lol.
Made a kind of heatsink for the driver with spare parts from the frame.

Wago's are ductaped to not come open.
Frame won't break anytime soon. Was a bit afraid for it before i started building because i choose cheap alu.

Shines bright :) And the dimmer is a nice option too.
Really wondering about the heat that will come off it.
And how them girls will react to it.

I didn't choose to ground the frame since the drivercase is from alu itself and i've grounded the driver so ..

FWIW, MechaTronix IceLED sinks are available pre-drilled, my CLU048 BJB holders fit perfectly.
I always save old wall transformers, using one like this for the fans...
