COB = foxtail?

From what i have seen on the COB grows here it seems like the COBS tend to foxtail the buds.

Just curious about what it is about the COBS that seem to cause that?

I notice it on blue/red supplemented cob lights. I believe if you dont get the far reds etc on a proper light cycle it will do more harm than good....like foxtailing in mid flower. This is merely an observation though since I dont run reds/blues.

i musta got the non-foxtailing cobs from @Greengenes707 ,maybe thats why they were so damn cheap lmao.

foxtailing is the cause of a few dif things,sometimes its just the genetics.it can be caused by too much nitrogen during flower,heat stress,lights too close,and even the heavy use of pgr's in flower.
Or maybe youre just dialled in better? Lol

I do think genetics plays some part. I have had my AK47 foxtail consistently under my hps while my White Russians and Northern Lights never do. However, my last run of AK didnt foxtail this time... so it cant be all genes.

Light intensity?

I've had every cheese strain I've ever grown foxtail on me, and those were all under 1000W HPS. Other strains grown at the same time in same flower room under same light/intensity/temps & feed grew without any foxtailing. Genetics most certainly plays a large role.

A friend of mine keeps telling me I should grow some cheese... any particular cheese you would recommend? Cheers

Heat.....

of course genetics and environment play a major role.....skunks will fox it seems.

I just pulled down some Herrer that foxed under 80F. I have bunch of mystery skunks I have been popping and the majority get so stretchy that it seems foxtails are the norm ?

maybe its skunk thing?

Confidential Cheese from Reserva Privada. Took a bit to get a good cure with it, but the wife still makes mention about the smell to this day haha
Was a good, potent indica dom that I got.

yeah def light intensity could be it.i see alot of cob growers thinking because its not hot under the lamp they can run them really close to the canopy.even @Growmau5 has pics where it looks like theres only 5 or 6 inches between the cob and the buds.to me thats too close for as much lumens we see coming off these cobs.my bars @ 24inches above are much brighter than a new 600w hps so theres def some sreious intensity with these cobs.

i have also had both cheese strains i ran do alot of foxtailing,its def a cheese trademark imo.

Some wild and crazy sativas foxtail from the start, just what the flowers are like. Seems to be a sativa trait. My most foxtail prone have been haze plants. With most though it occurs late in flower and adds little weight.

Some seem to think COB's finish plants faster so maybe the fox tails are appearing sooner as well. Me, myself and I see no difference in flower time with LEDs or COB's as opposed to hps.

@sixstring2112 has it right on.

Intensity is what cause foxtailing, and sometimes, a from a lack of red. But mostly intensity.

COBs and all high efficiency led's are tossing out tons of light. And like six said, many don't realized that and because the lack of heat...they drop them way down, causing super intensity and easy foxtailing.
A meter is a very good thing to have. Cheap par meters can be had for ~$125, and if your a grower more than just a small hobby..its well worth it.

Many ask me how high I hang my lights....my answer is 800-1000µmols. Not any length measurement. Some lights may need to be 1foot, some may need to be 3feet to chive that.

4K foxtailed more than I wanted consistently. Haven't had any consistent foxtailing with warmer spectrums.
Apaches foxtailed somewhat...but also had to keep the intensity below 1200µmols for me and my apache setups.

blueberry and cheese are both skunk pheno's err well pheno of a pheno :)...so maybe maybe....

I have had foxtailing under low PPFD....not to add more fuel to the fire.
Environment was fairly dialed in across lots of pulls, so i am fairly confident that wasn't fucking with em'.....could be the higher humidity though..the PNW has had a fairly cool summer but the humidity has been 20% above normal in my ambigous area even indoors...:peace:
