I raise chickens and have for about 12 years. I really never had a problem with birds of prey until several years back .
One beautiful sunny spring day my dogs were barking non stop for several minutes. When I went to investigate I found my dogs had cornered a juvenile hawk which had become entangled in a fishing net in the back corner of the building which had screen doors to the individual coops. I guess the young hawk thought he could pick up an easy meal but that didn't happen. I put the dogs away and proceeded to free the hawk . I got the wife to cover the bird with a pillow case . I had thick leather gloves on when I had gotten him out and took the bird to the outside of the building . The wife removed the pillow Case and I just tossed him in the air and he took off he flew a short distance and landed in a nearby tree . I watched him for a while and in a few minutes he took flight again this time flying out of sight. I have a nest every year on my property I don't know if the hawk I freed that day is one of the parents of the hawks that nest on my property every year.....I'd like to think so but I'm not sure but I've never again had a problem with hawks .
If You can Set up what looks like a bunch of Crows the eagle will stay away, Crows often Chase eagles off along with Seagulls. Try this with some Black Plastic Cut outs and see it that Helps if Not I dunno what else you can do, Except for put a Fence over your Chickens, Good Luck. Hope this helps you in some way.
Without a doubt, the number of raptors has skyrocketed in the last ten years. I remember we saw a bald eagle up at summer camp in N WI in 1974. It was exceptionally rare at the time. Now I go fishing right nearby every year and lose count of bald eagle sightings on the first or second day. Expect it to continue. Their numbers were severely depressed by overuse of DDT. Thanks Obama.I raise chickens and have for about 12 years. I really never had a problem with birds of prey until several years back .
I had a cat when I was very young, a tough bastard who scared the neighborhood dogs. One year his head became burger meat....a bluejay was dive bombing him, then dad got a bb rifle and nailed the jayI think they put meat covered in chilly powder down in India, but maybe the birds like it... Was going to say get dogs, but I reckon they could fuck a dog up easily having flight advantage...
Look at that, he hooked him!
No shit!. Fortunately we showed up after these fuckers:

Mine was a big orange stripped tabby! He was a fucking monster and he loved only meWhen I was a kid we had a large orange striped cat show up and made home. He earned his keep killing rats. He would kill and eats full grown rabbits. He would get in fights with dogs and coyotes. He was t tough s.o.b.
So a bald eagle has been making rounds. Went outside and there had been a scuffle. All chickens accounted for.
So any ideas how to deter eagles.
i got some ideas
1) scarecrow
2) take pot shots at it with some birdshot (its illegal but who cares)
3) this is more for the future then right now but get a dog and make a dog house near the coop and tie him up near the chickens but not where he could get at them

Everywhere I have gone this year (29 states) was lousy with hawks.
