collecting pollen from outsides?

i have a stud of a male plant in the bush,it is the last of a seed line bred by to flourish in our climate by a local breeder,only one out of 30 seeds germinated because of age,and all clones of this local producer were lost this past winter,i want the pollen that is just ready to start dropping(all the pollen sacs are purple kind of nice to look at)is it better to cut off a branch and bring it home and put in cup of water in the window sill and grab pollen as it drops,i never had much succes with this way,mind you only tried it once.so all tips welcome.thanks.i

do i do this were it is in the bush or after bringing it home.

Do it in the bush. Just put a bag over the top of one of the tops, tie string around it so it looks like a balloon growing out of the plant, I suppose. Then just shake the plant vigourously for a few minutes. Untie the string and harvest your pollen

That seems like a great idea and fairly hassle-free too. It's very similar to a method I used when I was working with a genetics company and we were developing breeding lines for canola plants.


With regards to marijuana, I've always just snipped a branch off and put it in a cup of water to lay in a window. I just poke the branch though a piece of tinfoil placed over top of the cup. Usually about a week later I've got all the pollen I'm gunna need. Works all the time.

i decided just to wait untill it was giving lots of pollen and went and shook it on tinfoil and that was that.

i have seen the brown bag method work before. i wonder will this produce female seeds or both???

not sure of that method,but i did witness the 3rd generation of a self pollinated outdoor strain.this years seeds took on a really hemp type structure,nothing like the seed when planted 3 years ago.it makes you see how much work needs to go in to stablise strains.2 generations of selfing and the hemp in the plant is out in full force.
