college study math test(entrance) need help please

so this is basic pre-algebra for starters. how many yard of material from a 24 yard length of cloth remain after 3 pieces, each 3 and a half yards long, and 5 pieces, each 2 and a fourth long are removed. heres what i did. 3.5x3=10.5, 2.25x5=11.25 add them 21.75. 24- 21 3/4(.75) is 3 an 3/4 not one of the answers i know is w and 1/4 but how? unless i did some thing wrong

now for the algebra: basic op of polynomials... what is the expression for the product of 3 less than twice x and 2 more than the quantity 3 times x

so i got 6x2(second power)+5x+6 probly wrong but i dont get it. still want to try on that note
product is times so is quantity. i just want to understand it.

sub values into alg expression... 2x(to 3rd power) - 3 xy x=-1 y=2

so its 2(-1)to the 3rd - 3(-1)(2) now where to start... neg times a neg is a pos right?

now for the shit i dont get but want to

for i= -1(to the power before the one) if 3i(2+5i)= x +6i, then x=?

^^^^^ fucken what. dont give me the answers just explain that one. as for the other i remember some of how to do it i just need help finding out how to get the correct answer so when i see this stuff again i know how to do it.

24 minus 21.75 is 2.25 is 2 and a quarter. cn

The next one in algebraic notation is (2x-3) (3x+2) which cranks out to 6xE2 -5x-6. (Remember: +x+ = +. +x_ and _x+ = -. -x- = +)

Third one: minus one to the nth power is -1 for all odd n and +1 for all even n, incl. zero. So 3x-1 - (-6) comes out to 3.

Fourth one: IF you mean i is (to the power of minus one), then xi is simply 1/x.
So the first expression becomes 1/3 (2+1/5) or 2.2/3 or 11/15.
The second one becomes x+1/6.
So x - 1/6 = 11/15.
x = 5/30 + 22/30
x = 27/30
x = 9/10

I'm doing the same stuff right now, I hate it so much.

I failed math once already (i was high too much) but classes aren't cheap so I gotta get on it!

got help from the school but for the time im not in school this helps a lot when i can hang and get help from you guys and gals. it makes it easier to just do math at home and not have to worry about shit

Well it's not your fault. There is no way anyone here can really help. He is having trouble setting up a linear equation and then the next question is setting up for a quadratic equation! He is using i as a variable and in math i = imaginary number.

In one post how do you explain mathematical properties, order of operations, setting up word problems, factoring, completing the square, binomial expansion, quadratic equation, imaginary numbers etc....

Math is a subject you can not cram for. You have to understand every step along the way or it all becomes gibberish after a certain point. So the poor OP has to take the classes, there is no substitute. It was kind of you to try to help.

(b+c)^2= (b+c)*(b+c) gotta factor it out

I agree. If you pay attention as you take math each individual concept is fairly easy, each concept builds, and is often dependent, upon the one(S) previously presented. So if math suddenly becomes confusing you missed an earlier concept. But with math you really can't do lateral entry to the entire math > algebra > trigonometry > calculus sequence. Once you are past calculus you have more flexibility.

I am proficient in calculus , differential equations, and linear algebra. I am sure others here also know math well. Don't be hating cuz we all smoke pot

a good learning aid i have seen is Patrick "just-math-tutoring"
