colour temp question

what colour temp is needed in a 1000 watt HPS bulb for growing my plants? please help thanks!

dude the color temp is already set in the bulb, which for a hps i believe is 2200K which is probably the best commercially produced light spectrum for a flowering plant.

can i use the HPS for vegging? and i didnt mean as if i were to set it i meant what kind should i buy

and can i just screw a hps bulb into a regular socket?

well a hps will work fine for vegging but if you put an hps bulb in a regular socket (provided the bulb even fits) you will start a fire, your house will burn down, and you will become cellies with big black bob when the fire dept finds the cause of the fire........ you need a proper ballast and proper socket for ANY HID bulb, and they arent cheap

well that is a good idea but at 100 bucks a bulb it would probably just be better and more cost effective to get a conversion bulb

Dude, if this is your first grow, I'm not saying it is....but you have to admit it kinda sounds like it, then I would say FUCK the HID's and go wit some screw in 67w++ (300w eqv) CFLs in the 2300K-2700K range. They are cheaper, easier and they do not get hot! This may be a better option for a beginner gardener. JUST MY OPINION PLEASE REFRAIN FROM REAMING ME A NEW ONE!

Here is my suggestion, get yourself 4 68w (300w eqv) cfl's labeled soft white (2700k) they are $12 and sum change at lowes or home depot or whatever lighting store you have near u.

Attached is pic of some of my old lights. They worked fine for vegging but i recommend adding 2-4 daylight spec (6500k+) cfls if your babies are under 3 wks...

okay man, thanks for the news however, i went to my local home hardware and they told me that there is no such thing as 68 w light bulbs:S so i got 4 60 w cfl's now im just looking for a fixture (that goes to the outlet) for them because i do not want to want to wire it im too lazy and dont wanna screw shit up, and the lights i got a cool white is that good?

yeah i went to home hardware and got 4 60 watt cfl and i got 15 watt fleurescent light on em

got a nice little fan about 3 or 4 above em so its cool i think

- HPS bulbs usually have a color temp. between 2000k - 2200k (Perfect for FLOWERING).

- The lumen output of a 1000 Watt HPS bulb is around 130,000 - 150,000 lumens.

- The average life expectancy of an HPS bulb is roughly 25,000 - 30,000 hours.

- You can find 1000 Watt HPS bulbs online between $50 - $110 depending on where you buy it.

- Your average 42 watt CFL will output 2800 lumens roughly.

- CFL's have an average life expectancy of 6,000 - 15,000 hours.

- CFL's can be found in many different color temps depending on your needs.

- On average a 42 watt CFL will run you 14 - 20 dollars a piece.

Color temp info :

2000k - 2500k (reddish orange light) is great for flowering.

6200k - 6700k (blueish white light) is great for vegging.

If you have a 1000 Watt Ballast then you will be better off buying a HPS bulb and using a few 6500k CFL's to compensate for the lack of blue light.

Even better is if you get a 2 in 1 HPS/MH bulb. These bulbs, known as Dual Arc Tubes, vary in price from $130 - $220. These are an excelent option if you have a 1000 Watt Ballast.
