- Watts are a measure of energy used, not light emitted. Lumens are a better measure.
- Search around google and here for "lumens per square foot", you'll find a number of previous discussions.
- You also need to know the size of your grow area to properly estimate the amount of lighting you need.
- These are good threads: https://www.rollitup.org/newbie-central/5100-newbie-lighting-lumens-per-square.html

- You'll need to understand the effects of distance on light received by your plants. Keep CFLs as close as possible without causing heat damage. Heat isn't near the issue as with HIDs.
- Also make sure you find the CFLs that have the correct color temperatures.

My basic advice, if you are new, is to just start somewhere and get growing. Start with 3,000 - 5,000 lumens per square foot for vegetative, double it for flowering. Just pay attention to your plants, they'll tell you what they need.

You can get 40W GE CFLs from hardware stores for around $10 that put out about 2600 lumens. So, you'll need at least one or two of these per square foot of grow area.
