Concerns with Cloning

So I'm about to take clones for the first time, and it seems like a very straightforward process. Here are the steps I plan on taking.

  1. Soak the rockwool in PH'd water for a while with a couple drops of superthrive (can't hurt).
  2. Take a clone from newer growth, make a 90 degree cut in the stem, scrap the the bottom of the stem a little (or split the bottom of the stem some) to provide more of a surface area for roots to grow, cut the big fan leaves in half, and remove any excess foliage that's near the bottom of the stem.
    • * If taking more than one clone at a time, keep them stored in plain water.
  3. Dip in rooting gel, place in*wrung out*rockwool (without the gel being scrapped off), place in a humidity dome (with heat mat) with the vents slightly opened, and place under 24/7 floral.
  4. A couple of times a day for 2 or so weeks until the clones root, take the dome off for a 10-30 mins or so and spritz with plain water.

While researching cloning methods, one thing that came up over and over again was that mold started to appear. Has anyone else been able to successfully clone using the same supplies that I have without mold almost ever being an issue?

Also, am I missing any important steps?

i cut it then put it in a cup of water, when roots show i put it in soil.
Hmm.. you just leave it sitting in plain water for a couple or so weeks? Do you use any hormones? Please explain in more detail... I might experiment with both ways.

[EDIT] Nevermind, I just found this: Cloning in a Cup of Water. Wish I would have f'n seen this before I brought all that extra crap..

ive cloned in RR/humidome/heatmat and also in aero clone machines. both have great results. but i have better/faster growth in the auer cloner machine. I add 8ml of regen a root solution to my ph'd cloner machine water along with 5ml of H2O and change water every 2 to 3 days. becareful with that superthrive, the reg dosing is 1 drop per gallon of water.

for the RR/humidome route, i soak the RR in technorflora thrive alive B1 (red) water solution, wring out, place 45* cut stem in cloner solution, then into RR. cover, 24/7 2-4' T8 6500 bulbs, and mist dome cover 3x daily. vents fully closed for 1 week. then 1/4 open the next week. then transplant into pots of soil. i use ammended FFOF (FFOF w/dolomite lime, great white mycoriazae(sp), extra perlite). and back under 24/7 6500k T8 bulbs untill 4 nodes show. then under my big 600w light.

The RR hasn't started to rot on you after having them sit wet/damp for a week or two in the dome? You ever try the cup of water method?

nope, i even germinated my seeds this way. daily during my misting, the dome was off for about 5 min minimum. that allows for fresh air 3x daily. and they are not wet, just damp. the RR was squeezed out of about 90% of all water.

Cool thanks for commenting. I've send enough money, so buying a clone machine is out of the question. I'm going to try both ways, RR and cup of water, to see what works best.

Wrung out...what the hell does that mean? Very bad for rockwool. I don't even use a hood anymore, I have a better rate without one.

wrung

[ruhng]

simple past tense and past participle of wring.

verb (used with object)1.to twist forcibly: He wrung the chicken's neck.

2.to twist and compress, or compress without twisting, in orderto force out water or other liquid (often followed by out ): towring clothes.

3.to extract or expel by twisting or compression (usually followedby out or from ).

4.to affect painfully by or as if by some contorting orcompressing action.

5.to clasp tightly with or without twisting: to wring one's hands inpain.
In step #1, I mentioned PH'ing the RR by soaking in water. In set #3, I was pointing out that I got the excess water out of it before I placed the clone into it... I wrung it out.

You have better success without a dome? Without it, isn't there more of a chance of the RR drying out?

I have used both methods and like your original post. Works well for me. When you say wrung out it sounds like your squeezing the cubes which is not recommended as it compresses and will have less air it the medium. You can just set them on a paper towel or another cube to soak out, some of the water. If you water from the top and keep your cubes too moist you can get mold. Not to much of an issue though.

keep us posted on how its going be interested to compare... I am starting on cloning also, making a hydro-machine as I speak (waiting on the nozzle's) The first 2 I did in soil and rooting gel they look good but slow slow 2 1/2 weeks . there still under a low 56 watt led and wilt under a t5 in couple hrs. so I know there not rooting very well. Want to ramp it up a little with the hydro method.first clones 002.jpg

You wrung it out as in you squeezed or crushed the rockwool like a sponge to remove water? If so then you might as well throw that one out as its ruined for all intensive purposes. All rockwool Ive ever seen comes with a warning...DO NOT CRUSH

ive done that with over 20 RR plugs and never had any issues. all 20 have grown w/o issues. 7 are now in 3 gallon pots, 8 are in 1.5 gallons, and 5 are in 1 gallons and were gifted to someone in need. ALL still thriving and growing strong.

Id skip #4. I leave my dome on all the time, with the top vents open just slightly. I lift them up a bit just so i can mist them with plain RO water to add some humidity to them, maybe once a day. I have a thermometer sensor in the dome and keep the temp inside the dome at between 82-87 degree's. I do not take the dome's off for any extended period of time at all untill they are all rooted. Ive found the are easily shocked this way. I took 100 clones three weeks ago and 99 rooted. ;-) once they are all rooted, i'll put a pencil or something under the two front corners of the dome just to lift them up 1/4" or so some air can move, withing 3-4 days i plant them.

the only thing different is i dont use rockwook, i use peat pellets, as im growing in a soil less mix. (sunshine 4)

I have not actually tried cloning yet. I picked up the "squeezing to get excess water out" from Marijuana Made Simple: A Beginner's Guide to Growing Like A Pro, YouTube Videos, and from reading how others, like DemonTrich for example, have done it...
