When im trimming leaves around the bud basically sugar leaves do I cut them all the way down to the stem or as close to the bud as possible? Wouldnt it be too hard to trim all the way down to the stem trying to get the scissors between the bud?

My rule of thumb is simple: if it has frosting it stays otherwise it gets trimmed off. How you trim is dependent upon the strain and other factors. Tight nugs get a different trim than airy buds, strains with a lot of frosting on the leaves get a different trim than those with hardly any frosting. I have a plant where the leaves are absolutely covered with trichs, These I trim loosely, leaving much of the leaves. I have other strains that you don't see hardly any trichs on the leaves, these get a very close trim.

So is it really just the style of each person and how they trim? Some leave leaves and some take them completely off? Anyone else have any input on this?

it also depends on your trimming skills and strains. i have some dense ass nugs i can usually get 90% of all the leafs off. i make hash, so weather they have crystals or not, they usually get cut. and when you buy weed, you are usually buying weed off someone that grows for profit. so they do not manicure it as good as they should. most home growers try to manicure the buds the best they can. i get nose hair trimmers and i can get the leafs pretty damn close to nothing. all you see is calyxes and crystals!! but it is pretty much a personal preference.

Yes... style is a big part of it. Some Trim ALOT to make the buds look even perfect & it gives them more TRIM.. . Some only trim what looks out of place & like more Clustery Nugs that are not so smooth and even. I personally like to leave sugar leaves on up until I manicure & jar because when they Nug Up & compact... The sugar leaves can make the bud seem denser, give it a different look & MORE TRICHS to Smoke. Sorry I am rambling.

what about trimming the leaves growing out of the buds while still flowering for better light penetration? Im in week 6 of flowering with 2 plants that I have tied down everywhere and have a 2 foot tall plant with probably at least 10 tops each, but the buds are not very dense and Im wondering if trimming back some of all the bushy leaves growing out of the buds is going to help or not. Im using a 600 watt hps and GH Flora blend. Any help would be appreciated. One more thing, Iv randomly herd some say that the buds really start to tighten up in the last 2 weeks and swell pretty good, anyone have anything to help? Thanks...I realize how old this thread is.

Leaves are solar panels for the plants. Spreading them is fine, but I would't remove them. As for density, they should start to swell a bit when then the pistils start to retract inside the calyx. At 6 weeks in you have at the least a couple a weeks left if it's indica and possible doubled for sativa.
