Construction workers of RIU tell us what you do

That's why we have chalk-lines. If you get a straight start there is no excuse for wavey courses is there???

Shit Ive been roofing 20 odd years .. I never use a chalkline .. You go snap your lines and by the time your done I'll have a sq or a sq and a 1/2 laid down already ,,, Thats like a "real painter" does not tape off anything .. I did this roof by myself just me my knife my roofing gun and a radio I did use roof brackets .. the front has 2 dormers did a western weave .

I've done a lot of historic buildings where there are no straight lines and so you need to establish one to start. I agree on new construction you can slap shingles on straight, no problem.

that house in the picture was built in 1927 .. I roofed it and sided it.

Growing up in Tucson AZ i used to do alot of landscaping and mason work. When i tell people that when we dug a footer it was actualy 1' foot deep and 1' wide they never believe me.
The ground was that hard....and if you could not get a backhoe in there it was pick and shovel time.....lotsa mountains in AZ with lotsa areas you cant get backhoes into.

Oh yeah ,I was afraid it was contract, we used to try do talk people into time and materials on reno work, saved our asses a few times too. We once ran into a situation in a kitchen reno where they had poured concrete down all the stud spaces. Don't know why. If that was a contract job we would have been up the creek. But it's hard to do, all too often we were on contract too.

This job is in 3 parts ..

The T&G on the walls total 120'
Replacement windows (ordered waiting )
Tumbled slate tile on floor Waiting on the delivery 10 days late .. coming from some quarry out west ..1,350 sq feet

Geez, ain't waiting for suppliers a bitch. I remember too many days sitting at the building supply yard waiting for a truck to unload so we could get our material and start work for the day. That's always the problem with special orders it seems.
