container size and shape when growing

Hi,
im new to this place but i have done a litle bit of looking around the forum and alot of people here know an awful lot about what their doing so i was wondering if anyone here could help a newbie :).

ive just finished my first grow indoors using 28cm diameter, 30cm tall circular pots. but i want to be able to put many more plants under my light so i was wondering, wha difference does the containers shape make if any?
i was thinking about having a 15cm x 15cm x 20cm square pot, fill it with soil, then take another square pot with the bottom cut away an placing this pot on top of the on that has.been filled with soil. repeating this until i have got about 10/11 liters of soil in them.

would this work? i am not really limited on height but i am limited on horizontal space because of the need to get plants in the optimum proximity of the light in using (600w HPS)

any comments would be greatly appreciated :)

are you just asking if you can do it, or if it's a good idea? Or are you asking if it makes a difference growth-wise if the container is round or square?

go for 7 gallon grow bags. 1 dollar or so each on amazon. Use at least 5 gallons.

Square pots are to save spave usually for hydro on an ebb table and most garden pots are wider and not taller like the orange buckets everybody uses. Square works just fine, especially with sog. sounds like what you are doing.

you can stack pots on each other and just cut out the bottom to make really big pots and no transplant stress. It is called pot in pot.

pot size makes a huge diference. bigger the better.

chunkymunkey33 , im asking really if by putting pot in pots it will effect the size of the plant?. will the plants do fine if there is only about 6 inches of space horizontaly but bout 20 inches of space downwards?

yeah bro theyll be fine. roots grow in the space theyre allowed. allow them to get there and theyll go that deep. make sure ur soil isnt packed to shit though so the root wont have to fight to grow. dig?

thanks Jordy Villain, just one last quick thing, im working with area aprox 1 meter squared (3.3 feet x 3.3 feet), any idea how much spacing i should put between the plants if there in 6" wide pots?, keeping in mind im looking to put quite a few plants in this area

Yeah like Jordy said, they'll be fine. That's a good idea, just remember that since they are only 6X6 they won't have much room to branch out if you put them close together so you may want to lollipop them.

You remove the bottom 1/3 of the plant so there's minimal, if any, branching. What it does is allow the plant to focus all of it's energy on the rest of the plant to create monster colas. Some people grow a few plants that take up more space because of the containers and the size of the plants, and others do a bunch of smaller plants. There's a user on here that has had success with this method and I'm going to go find him and post the link right now.

This is a link to a random post of his GypsyBush), but it shows a good picture of what it will look like. It may not seem like it would be alot but imagine a shitload of them. https://www.rollitup.org/2211249-post7.html If you have any other questions just send him a private message and let him know that his skills were mentioned in a thread and you have a few questions about the lollipop technique. I'm sure he'll be happy to help.

I also have to say that stacking pots is a headache. Water can't get to the lower roots as easily and flushing is a bitch. Instead, I would go with 3 to 5 gallon (11 to 19 liter) grow bags. The 11 liter ones measure about 17cm x 19cm x 33cm. I put 12 under my light in a closet with good results. I suggest you try growing lots of smaller plants that are pruned to prevent side branching. Keep them tall and skinny. How big is your grow area?

thank you very much for the link chunkymunkey33,

davalaban, my grow area is aprox 1meter x 1meter (or 3.3ft x 3.3ft), however it is not a closet grow, the area i grow in is just a portion of a dis-used room so i am able to go a lil bit more but i dont want to go much more because i want to keep the plants under a decent intensity (i have a 600w HPS).....im starting to think about maybe putting 20 plants into this area, which is why i started this thread to see what people thought of tall, thin containers...plus im quite a heavy smoker so im looking to get this second grow producing a reasonably large amount compaired to my first grow which, i dont mind saying, was not the most brilliant success i hoped for lol
