Cooking the soil

So how does one go about cooking the soil? I've read about it and wondering what's up with that, I couldn't really find anywhere on exactly how to do it. Is it just mixing the soil, then watering it, and let it sit outside for a month? Thanks

let it sit with a lid, like a garbage can or large rubbermaid tote. remember to stir it every week or so once you start seeing the fungus grow on the top.

Just water it once....if you've covered it and it's not too hot out it should be good for a while.....

Actually cooking or roasting the soil used to be done in the old days ...for killing pathogens that chemicals just didn't kill back then, I don't do this but have watched some guys once cook/roast several hundred pound/kilos, they eventually moved there operation to a disused hospital of the USSR era, got caught cooking soil in the ovens ..sent to prison one of the guys died of TB in there ...shame, .....never ever forget he stink, but the soil was from the cemetery other side of town ....lol

holy shit thats quite a story lol like it was said above tho, were more referring to composting :P screw cooking it haha but in most cases yeah. your "cooking" it to (its something like this) break down all complex bonds or something in the nutrients so itl be easier for the plant to absorb.

Btw, how wet should I get it? Like drown it or just get it moist? I'm guessing just getting it moist lol

Yeah just moist or else it can go anaerobic pretty fast....

& if it's really cold out it may take a pretty long time to cook.....I would try to to put your pile somewhere warm.

It is still done today , usually by steam or direct flame to the soil in place

or theirs the backyard DIY approach of useing a black tarp on top of moist soil for a week to month , dependant on weather ,, Called solarazation

Althow it seems hear at RIU cooking refers to inoculting soil with beneficials
