could I get away using a 250 Watt HPS in my tent

Whats up guys,

I have been pondering switching to a 250watt hps over my current set up.

my current setup is:
-4'x2'x4' grow tent in a closet.
-I have a 6" 240 CFM inline fan exhausting the tent at the top and just passively intaking air thru the bottom
intakes plus 2 tornado fans inside the tent.
- for lighting I use 3-55w Cfl, 1-65w Cfl(all 2700K), and 1-45w Cfl(6500K)
total wattage equivalent 1100w
total lumens 18,900 lumens
average temp: 81F
average humidity 48%
temp can be easily adjusted for me by switching on the air conditioner for when I turn it on
my basement cools really fast in the summer.
-1-exhale co2 bag

-With the stats that I have presented would I benefit by going to a 250w hps
with my current set up ???
-Would heat be that much more than my current light setup???
-Could I even afford to go up in wattage to maybe a 400w hps?

You'll really be pushing things with only 4' of height and an HPS, even one enclosed in a cool tube or similar. And yes, you'd need to cool the HPS because if you are running 81F now, it will be above 90F with 250w or 400w HPS (without sealed cooling).

I've thought about switching to HPS, currently I use 800(yes 800)actual CFL watts spread out over 22 mixed bulbs.

There are 2 reasons I do not:

1. I've already done side by side grows w/equivalent amounts of MH/HPS wattage vs mixed CFL(2700&6000K), and they come out about the same. Few people know this, but CFL's do emit some UV/UVB...albeit small amounts.

2. Me switching to an MH/HPS will limit what I can do in my grow room. I can adjust CFL's to grow a seedling next to a 5 footer in a 5 gal...you can't do that kind of stuff with a fixed unit.

So, why do you want to switch as opposed to adding more CFL's?.

Why not just stick a 150W HPS in there ( cool tube )? Doesn't sound like you have a smell problem since you have no filter now anyway. spend the $80 and your girls will be soooo much happier. 81 is a bit much, do what you can to drop that temp.
