Crunchy Buds

So, I'm pretty much a beginner, looking for some advice. I've harvested a couple times now and each time the buds have dried very quickly - like 2 days in the closet and they are crunchy as hell with trichomes falling off like dust. I've tried various lengths for the flushing cycle but still getting a funky flavor in the smoke. Are the buds crunchy like this because I'm not flushing right? I'm using General Organics for nutrients, and an organic soil .... I have a feeling it could be the soil I'm using. I'm told it already has all the nutes the plant will need throughout it's life (cheating, I know, but I didn't want to chance anything being a beginner) so I have a feeling it's either the combination of the nutrients I'm adding and/or not enough flushing? Maybe it's just time to move to a simpler growing medium?
 
thank you! not sure what you mean by RH but it's pretty cool in the closet. I'd guess the temp during the day (in winter) is about 62F. Maybe it's just not humid enough in the winter? Air here is pretty dry right now ....
 
RH is Relative Humidity, that is how the moisture in the air is measured/gauged

I just can't see how any buds could dry crunchy in two days with such low temps, even if the RH was very low.

Anyhow, all I can say is increase the RH....and pics would be nice
 
An easy cheap way to raise rh is to sit a cup of water in your drying area. It's winter here and really dry. It doesn't seem to be a real fix, it only raised the rh 10%, but every bit helps.
 
Put a humidity and temp. gauge in your closet. Then look up the ideal temps and humidity levels for drying and curing.
 
yeah Sun King, I'm surprised myself. The stems were still somewhat flexible, creasing easily but not snapping. But the buds are crunchy which is why I had suspected not enough flushing. Could that even be a cause or is it simply an RH issue? and thanks for the tip Cereal box, I'll try that
 
.... sorry, now that i think about it, it was 3 days. but still, too fast to be crunchy like this i would think. the day i chopped it i cut just the fan leaves, collected the trim leaves 2 days later, then jarred it the day after because the buds were already obviously dry and crunchy.
 
You are most likely suffering from bud density issues which can definitely cause bud to dry to a crisp in just 3 days. Can I ask what strain your growing? If its not the strain then your low density could be due to things such as high heat levels in the flowering stage, not having a strong enough light, or having some sort of major deficiency that damaged your large fan leaves.
 
Ideally this situation would be taken care of by doing a proper drying and curing cycle. But seeing as you already have crispy critters you will need to re-hydrate your bud. Here's how -- Put the bud in a large mason jar or other sealable glass jar. A large baggie will work in a pinch. Using a spray bottle sprays 2-4 healthy sprays over the bud. (I'm figuring you are doing around one oz.?) Make sure the package is airtight and put in the 'fridge for 12-24 hours. My humidity here is so low I have had the same problem all winter. I use 3 sprays to take one oz. from crispy to dry. Works 4 me, BigSteve.
 
wow, thanks for the great advice everybody! i should have joined this site sooner ..... ok so, it could be high heat. i use a space heater in the winter and sometimes feel i let it get a little too hot. it never seems too out of control though. but if you're telling me weaker lights could cause low density buds then maybe that's the real issue .... not using HPS, using the T5s. it was a nice beginner price etc, and i didn't want to spend too much on something i wasn't entirely sure of how to even do yet lol. does anyone have opinions on the T5s? i think i know the answers but i'm curious. anyway, in my novice opinion, the plants themselves seem relatively healthy. i'll have another small harvest in a couple weeks and will put this info to good use. thanks!
