In Europe, they call the trichomes RESIN GLANDS. Slang in America is Crystals. That is while still on the plant, the majority being near the buds.
After they are removed and accumulated, they are called KEIF, and if you heat and compress them into a brick OR cube or lump, it is then called HASH or HASHISH.
K1Ng5p4d3 gave a great description on making BUBBLE HASH.
Trichomes are STICKY when warm or room temperature, but when frozen or chilled, they jUSt "let go" and quit clinging to the leaves. I tried twice making BUBBLE HASH, and for an old stoner like me, I made a mess and my hands turned blue from the ice water.
Then I got a KEIF BOX OR KEIF COLLECTOR.

Man, a whole new world opened up for me. Every time I roll a Joint, I use my keif box as a rolling tray and capture my keif. After about 30 joints, I got enough for a gram or two grams of hash.
AND WHEN I HARVEST A CROP!!! OH, HAPPY DAY !!!
I manicure and trim my leaves off the buds and save them in a shoe box, to dry over 5 or 6 days. . I do not use the big fan leaves, they hardly have any trichomes on them. I make oil from them. Off of my last 5 plants, I got about 6 ounces of trim leaves. I got 16 ounces of Manicured dried buds, my pics are in my album here on RIU.
I put the dried trim leaves in the freezer and take out a 1/2 cup at a time and rake them over and over in my Keif Box. Mine came with a little wood and leather tool to rake them
around inside the tray. (they don;t stick to leather) The Keif falls thru the screen in the tray and catches it. Then I gather it, compress and bake it in a cigarette cellophane and Ta Da ! HASH! BLONDE SWEET HASH!

there are a dozen videos on YOUTUBE too, even using a coffee grinder to extract the Keif.
