I'm approaching harvest time and i was wondering after the plant dry can i break the colas down so they fit inside the 1 qt jars that i have or should i purchase larger jars and let the colas cure whole before breaking them down?

shouldnt matter, when i harvest i dont leave the top colas big anyways, i cut them off the stems so i get nice nugs, not a 7 gram nug that has a 1 gram stem in it.

you have about the best problem ever ;)
The only benefit I've heard of from leaving a cola whole is while it cures big buds and colas are supposed to continue resin production. I've never had any noticable difference myself, but if its too big for a jar I cure it in a bag.

I'm not concern with showing off my huge colas.. I'll probably take a couple of pictures after they dry and save them on a cd if i really want to see them again.. but hell only 3 people know i grow and i want to keep it that way. Thanks for ur input!! +rep

LOL thanks.. it is a good problem to have i never even looked at it like that lol. I never heard of the cola continuing to produce resin during the curing process.. I'm going to have to look in to that. Also what type of bags do you use to cure? +rep

maybe it was potency or something, either way, doesn't seem any different to me.
just a brown paper bag in a closet, top open, door shut and light off. check on a big sucker like that in 5 days and bend a nug, if it snaps off its done, if it bends a little before snapping its perfect, if it just bends check in 2 more days

You can always keep the main cola in a tupperware container if it's too big for your jars. Tupperware works just as well as long as it's air tight. They sell some pretty big containers too, and they're a bit cheaper then jars. Of course, if money isn't an issue then just buy bigger jars. I say this, as opposed to breaking down the cola, because I prefer to keep my colas intact. They are easier to handle, and the less you physically handle them the less resin comes off on your hands and scissors and whatever. Deep inside the cola is usually packed with resins and cutting them up can lose some.

With very large colas, I believe you will get a better, more uniform cure with less chance of mold by cutting them off the main stalk into nice sized buds.

If you put the whole cola in without cutting down to nuggies then it'll just take the thing a lil while longer to cure. So if you're prepared to wait then so be it.
Just dont forget to use a hygrometer so you don't have to guess the RH.
But the eye appeal to the potential smoker is jaw dropping. I let some colas cure unpruned...waited,,,then blamo...they were friggin beautiful.
