My last grow, which was ages ago, I left the plants in total darkness for about 24 hours. Then I chopped the plant (the whole plant) above the base and hung it upside down in a dark closet with a slight fan blowin on them for a couple days. After that I cut the individual buds off, with a good amount of stem intact, and hung them upside down from hangers in the same dark, cool closet for a couple days. Then I trimmed away most of the empty stem and placed the buds in a cardboard box, just placed spaced layed flat with the box top open, in the dark with the same oscilating fan on low, for another few days. Then once the outside of the buds feel dry(crispy) to the touch, I put them in jars to cure. But you have to open them and let the moisture out a few times a day. Otherwise your buds could get mildew/mold. A good way to test how moist the buds are is to try and snap a stem--If the stem just bends like a rope it is still plenty moist. If the stem cracks like a toothpick then it is very dry. Dont jar them up untill the stem is about in between bending and snapping. Never jar up w/ too much moisture because its really easy for the buds to get mold/mildew. better a bit dry then moist.
