Just Incase you don't know the very first ever production lighthouse bulb is still in operation somewhere in the world (unsure where) but OSRAM and a few other companies realised they'd soon be out of business if light bulbs lasted forever so they built into bulbs planned obsoletion and failures.

I saw a documentary once about planned obsoletion in everything we buy. It was called something along the lines of "the men who made us buy stuff"

Right, but which came first, the chicken or the egg? Lifespan of manufactured products powered by electricity will always be limited by the materials available for use in manufacture. I just bought a Philips slimstyle 60w equivalent (10.5w actual) LED bulb that is calculated to last 22.8 years (25,000 hours actual lifespan). That blows away the compact fluorescent it is replacing and obliterates the incandescent bulb before that. In the face of technological improvements, planned obsolescence is not much of an issue.
