It says it will give any ship the capability to wipe out a aircraft carrier. BULLSHIT!!!!! Aircraft carriers have whats called Phalanx or Sea Wiz (CIWS). Basically a long range 20mm Gatling gun shooting spent uranium bullets. Designed to kill missiles shot at the ship. FWIW aircraft carriers do not go alone, you have about 10 other ships and a Submarine that accompany it.
Close in Weapon systems like Phalanx or Goalkeeper, are far from being 100% effective, and one cruise missile will make a big mess of any ship.
The video shows a CIWS engaging a large and easily acquired target, an aircraft at a high elevation.
Sea skimming cruise missiles are a MUCH more difficult proposition, they are intended to be launched from over the horizon, and are hidden by radar clutter until they are VERY close indeed to their target, they are a very small and very fast object, giving any CIWS almost no time to react.
Launch a number simultaneously and it's bye bye USS MASSIVE.
The CIWS was DESIGNED PURPOSELY to take out low flying cruise missiles shot at a ship. They can see the missile 20 miles out. It takes the CIWS about .001 second to fire off 20 rounds of spent uranium. Plenty of time.
You weren't in the NAVY, if you were you would know what a CIWS is, Its a Close In Weapons System. DESIGNED TO DESTROY MISSILES.I would say, Sir, as a former Naval Officer who worked on this stuff, YOU have no idea what YOU are talking about. No way can any current radar system pick out a sea skimming missile from the clutter at anything LIKE that distance.
And if I were seriously wanting to take out a large carrier, I would use a nuclear-tipped torpedo. (Don´t get me started on that one.)
That video was aload of BS, the weapon was aimed way above the horizon. Sorry, CIWS just do not reliably destroy sea skimming missiles - I was involved in a load of tests on this - you sure as hell were not - and I was in the Royal Navy, not your mob - and the best CIWS type, Goalkeeper, fires explosive 20 mm shells, not the inert DU favoured by you Americans.
And a CIWS is just one of several layers of ´defence in depth´ - the first layer is where our aircraft engage enemy aircraft and ships before they even have a chance to deploy any missiles. The final layer is deploying chaff.
