Deer Problems

I should have known that deer would love pot as much as people do. I keep having deer eat my plants and it's really pissing me off. Does anyone have any good tips to keep deer away from my plants without having to build a fence around them?

Bring several large coffee's with you out in the woods and start drinking...you'll be pissing up a storm...make a perimeter of piss around your plants to ward off the deer...

You can also take garlic powder, or fresh garlic that you grind up and spread that around the area as well. Also smash a few dozen eggs around the area...the stink makes em go away...

you can also get some deer repellant: http://www.amazon.com/230-Deer-Rabbit-Repel-Rtu/dp/B004MPKF5Y

I always spread some hair around from the barber shop .. does the trick up where i live , deer repellant is good too but has a habit of drawing small critters and bugs in if you use it too close to your plants..

One of my spots has a very high population of white-tails. They feed, sleep, and probably mate within 25 yards of my plants every year. However, this spot also has a ton of native wildflowers among other food sources. Their trails are easy to spot b/c they inevitably lead to a water source, I plant far away from those b/c their clumsy ass hooves are a bigger problem for me. Deer can be discouraged by placing twine at both a 18" and 3 foot ht. I used to do that before I moved that site by tying around trees repeatedly.

Note: Do NOT using fishing line to rope off a grow site...when the sun hits it you can see that stuff a mile away.

just use chicken wire to make cages around them until they get over about 1-2 feet tall

deer look for the small tender plants and they wont be interested in your girls once they get bigger

I actually had some 4 ft bushes that got chomped by deer and it was right when they started to bud in Aug/Sept. I heard "liquid fence" pest repellant is the way to go if you don't consider building a fence. I tried a repellant that I got from OSH and it sucked.

I have previously used human hair from the barber shop (tell your barber it is for your garden) placed in pantyhose and draped over a tree branch so that air flows through it and spreads the smell around, mix in some irish spring soap cut up and spread around and the deer will think people are around and stay away!

i would say they where playing in your crop not eating it. when there small about 2 feet i cover them all with dead tree branchs. bushy ones that make a mess that noting wants walk around in it. liqiud fence works but they realy dont eat it once the get over a foot. turkey like to dust them self in fresh durt. there wings floping around will kill a plant in sec. id mulch. and put op some kind of logs or something so it not a picnic to go threw.

Build a fence to protect very valuable plants from hungry animals, forget the easy way out *(hair, piss, liquid fence and shit) , better with a steel fence.

Gotta remember that most of us are pot heads we got just enough to do our grows well most of us and also takes alot of work time and money for a steel fence three things most pot heads dont have lol also very easy to pick from the air if its not a medical grow too but if was doing outdoors with a big enough crop yes its a great idea but just most of us are hobbiest growers imo

i had the same problem deer repel works okay but you have to reapply quite often especially if it rains alot.If you have a dog let him piss around the plants you should do the same they hate dog smells much worse than humans also good old fashioned moth balls always worked for me havent lost a plant in years beware of soap it attracts rodents hope this helps

Urine and hair do not work. Even the old moth ball and soap trick has minimal effectiveness. The only thing that will keep deer out is a physical barrier of some kind. Everything else is merely a deterrent.

I use a homemade spray and it seems to have worked for me. I use about a teaspoon of cayenne pepper and a teaspoon of garlic powder mixed with water. Let sit for a day or two and strain out solids. Load that into a small spray bottle and spray in the area around my plants. Doesn't appear to damage the foliage either so I usually try to let some overspray hit them. That way if they go to nibble they are getting a mouthful of cayenne and garlic.

other then fencing, only thing thats worked for me is habanero peppers in blender with vegetable oil. blend very fine, let sit in fridge overnight. strain, add few drops of liquid dish soap, add water. put in spray bottle, n have at it. i,ve had em stomp my plants to hell when they got burntbut, the plants were salvaged n no longer nibbled on. although later that year fawns chewed bark off a few n killed em....peace brim ps. im having venison stew for dinner

Have you ever sprayed directly on the plants? I was a little apprehensive at first but it doesn't seem like pepper or garlic harms the foliage at all. Of course, I wouldn't do it in flowering, but by then they are huge and could handle a nibble or two here or there. Plus later in the season there are more natural food sources available so they really aren't after the shoots like they are in May.
