You can always tuck fan leaves as needed rather than remove them.
I don't understand the point of this. Stuffing them away from the light defeats the purpose. It also reduces air circulation, and will probably end up dead and hanging in the bush until you pull it out. A lot of the time you can't tuck them anyway. They are like an awning hanging over a shorter bud.

don't the leaves have some kind of special growth properties like creating sugars or storing nutrients or something like that? Even with minimal light if they aren't causing airflow issues or light blocking issues, you should try any means of keeping them around? I'm not actually sure it just seems logical to my noob brain.

Leaves function as nutrient stores that supply the plant in flower. They also transpire which helps cool the plant.
