Did I Cook My Seeds?

Hey everyone, I am a new member but a long time lurker.

Recently I was given a gift of some seeds from a grower friend. I am soaking them in distilled water for 24 - 48 hours and then planting them directly into my growing medium.

However, the first day I placed them in the cup on top of my cable box, and then placed a towel around the cup to lightproof it, when I checked them in the morning, the water was QUITE warm. I'm not sure of the actual temperature, but I can guess that it was in the upper eighties or possibly ninties.

I quickly moved them into my grow box which has an ambient temperature of about 75 and they are still in darkness, soaking in the water.

The beans have soaked for 36 hours now and four of them have cracked. Should I wait to see if any of them sprout a root before planting them or what do you guys think?

If after 48 hours nothing has happened do I assume that I have successfully killed these seeds and try again?

Bump. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Really weird as I have 2 seeds from the same strain. I put one on a plate in between warm paper towels and a lid and kept it on my window ledge. My brother had his seed, stick it in some plastic bottle with a bit of tissue at the bottom and water and put it in his stuffed up draw.

His sprouted. Left mine another day, still nothing, so stuck it in his bottle and it sprouted in less than 24hours.

Whilst on the subject (sorry to hijack!), once you've planted your sprouted (germinated) seed (about 1/2 an inch into soil) how long should it take for it to shoot above the surface?

it really sounds like you are overdosing on the water. what I would do is carefully take the cracked seeds and put wrap them gently in damp paper towel. don't make it too wet. it shouldnt be extremely heavy nor dripping. it has to have some water though, so you should be able to squeeze it and have some water drip out, but not too much. keep em in a bottle for another 1-2 days and see what happens.

When my seed germinated and I placed them in the soil, it took less than a day for it to shoot straight up. Well this was after I planted it with the very small leaves just above the soil. it stretched pretty tall, about 1.5 inches upwards. you don't want that though. once it goes up you should really give it light. i put my CFLs about an inch away from the plant and its doing good.
