Differences between the U.K and U.S Smoking scenes?

hey everyone,

just thought i'd start this topic up because i see big difference in the U.K and the U.S when it comes to Mary Jane.

Maybe it is because the certain area from the U.K i am from. it's quiet here, life moves on slowly.

Before i grew, i had been smoking for some time. I never had any idea of strains etc. to me, weed was just..... weed at the end of the day. i had no understanding.

Now i've completed a grow i seem to have gained this great wealth of knowledge and understanding of the plant and smoking in general. i respect it so much more.

where i live, it's never a question of "what strain is it?" or "where's it from?" etc. These questions never get asked so the buyer is never made aware of the variety.

i guarantee most people around here wouldn't even know that there was such a wide range of strains. But it seems that guys from the U.S really know their stuff. Maybe i'm just gereralising?

Is this because you grow you know so much?

or do non-growers also know which strains are good etc?

sorry for this rant, having trouble getting my point across. hopefully some of it made sense? if not, i'm sorry

not trying to exclude people from other nationalities from the topic, tell me what it's like where you live? are people aware?

i thought i knew weed when i came to this site... then realized that i had no clue...
im an american by the way...
where im from very few ppl know that there are strains and that there is even a male and female plant...
it's not just the UK.. its everywhere im guessing...
however, i sure medical marijuana states know more since ppl can shop for weed like they do candy ...

i find it weird looking back that i didn't mind smoking it, yet i had no clue about it.

most people don't know shit. several of my friends look to me to validate their purchases because they know that I know things.

huh, i think that you can appreciate it a lot more when you start to get an understanding.

don't those people want to learn what a good purchase is for themselves??

Had not been for the internet I would no nothing about growing let alone start doing it. .... Intraweb your my ownly friend.

first strains i ever heard of were legend: acapoulco gold, panama red, skunk, purple kush, northern lights etc.
there are few strains that are easily recognizable and that stand out.
that is why i am trying to make my own seeds. the variety must be nearly infinate.

all of my friends know what weed it is im not sure if your asking if they can point out northern lights compared to some kush but they sure ask the dealer before they buy and half of my friends know how to grow so i would say america is very informed

You're just generalizing.

To many people here in the US it's just weed, people who sell it here (in my area) can't even tell you the strain.

I get some kinda red hair skunk weed most of the time, sometimes a light green that doesn't have much of a smell, and sometimes a sticky dark brown weed that is also really skunky.

They all smoke the same, I use the light green for baking with since it doesn't have a very strong taste.

People on this forum seem to be experts

I guess I didn't really know much about Ganja (cept how to smoke it) untill my first Trip to the Dam.

Smoking a bunch of different stains, knowing what they are, and being able to compare them is REALLY educational.

It's when you try and remember which was which the problems start.

lol i have enough trouble remembering what I had for dinner!!!

But yeah, here in uk when u buy weed, the most info I get is, it's a bit damp, or a bit dusty etc.

i wish it was a case of, this stuffs gonna cost you more, but its this strain or whatever, but its seems weed is weed to them.

The main difference between the US and the UK smoking scene is that we (UK and most of Europe) Generally smoke our weed mixed with Tabacco, where as elsewhere (the US) they don't seem to do this.

Just for the record, I know some dealers who DO somewhat distinguish between strains, for example, you know when you're getting Kush (Very popular in Bristol ATM) because they tell you.....and then charge an extra £5 on the Q.... but at least it's really Kush.

thats one of the biggest differeances that I know of....
In the UK people are charged one price usually for good stuff and one price for bad stuff, even if they know what it is.
Here there is a little more compatition in the field and everyone wants the best stuff...so we keep up with strain names for it.
Kind of gives you an edge on the market if your a dealer I guess?

See I wish it was like that for me, I'd rather pay more and actually know what I am smoking!!!

Its kinda like the liqour market, Most folks buy the cheap six pack and are what allows the rest of that market to flourish. Same in our market. VV

I think it all depends on the people you know. I'd say its 50/50 when it comes to people being weed wise in my personal experience, in the uk, ireland and most of europe the majority of people just want to get fucked up reguardless of strain, flavor, smoke etc etc. Being from the UK I know this is fact. Now a lot of people who want to get fucked up, want to get fucked up with quality weed and know their shit. Its just like coke, some people would put anything up their hooters and some people want quality and will usually ask for a sample first. I find the older you get the more clued in youll get.

Very Wise words, when I was younger I would buy anything just to get me stoned, these days i have many more preferences than just getting mashed!

As you say, taste, type of high etc.

Just wish there was more dealers that gave us that choice, with most, they get their cash and thats all that matters.

But hey, now i've taken the plunge into growing, I can pick and choose whatever I want!
