Digital Ballasts and RFI Waves??

Hey everybody. Didn't know where else to post this problem to so I hope this is ok. I'm running a Welthink 600 Watt HPS/MH Digital Ballast for my grow. I've used this ballast for about a year and everything was fine until I recently moved.

The light had been on for about 2 days when all the sudden my cable stopped working. I called Comcast to come and check it out and he basically said that there was a ton of interference in our cable lines and that we blew our outside breaker. For some reason, I just knew it had something to do with my grow, which by the way, was located no more than a foot through the wall where the cable line was that he testing with his fancy meter. Anyway, he said he had to go to his truck to get something and I ran into my grow room and yanked the main plug. He comes back in after doing some tinkering and checks the line again. Lo and behold, no interference this time. He left thinking he had fixed it and was a cool dude.

I was freaking out though, and jumped on the computer right when he left to see if something from my grow would've triggered the cable to shut down. I found out that old (pretty much 1st and 2nd generation) digital/electronic ballasts send off huge amounts of RF waves that could potentially make this happen. I found two other threads from people that talked about their digital ballasts causing their cable (or someone else's) to shut off, thus prompting an unwelcome visit from the cable guy, but no real definite answer to my question.

Sorry to be long, but my question is, if I go out and replace my old digital ballast with a new magnetic ballast of the same proportions (600 watt, hps) can I just plug this into my existing reflector and be good to go? I'm not gonna be pumping out shit tons of RF waves again right? Someone please just give me some input on this if you have any, I'm really pretty freaked out over this.

Thanks in advance.

bump. nobody? I'm about to trade a digital ballast I paid almost $300 for new for an old ass magnetic ballast. I want to be sure this is the right decision.

I am no fan of digital ballasts to begin with, this is just another good reason not to like them. The magnetic will treat you right and cure your Interference problem. I am not sure if you will need a new socket set for the light though. That will depend on the mfg. specs of both items. I know that some are digital specific.

hmm ok thanks. i hope i don't need new cords and all that shit too. money out my pocket man!

not sure if they interfere with satelite waves or now. I've done some research and came to the conclusion that digital ballasts made 2 or 3 years ago when they first were coming out weren't built with RF shields to limit the waves from escaping from the ballast and cord. I never had a problem whatsoever with it until I placed it next to my main cable wire, which prompted the cable company to come check out my house. Scariest. Shit. Ever. I won't even chance hooking it back up until I know I have something that isn't gonna be basically calling the police on me. Thanks for the input though.

Unless I missed it in the ad it neglects to mention if it is magnetic or digital. I guess we are supposed to assume it is magnetic because it doesn't mention digital. You can get a used magnetic ballast and rebuild it with a new ignitor and capacitor for about $50.00. The power supply rarely fails. I have seen used magnetic ballasts on ebay & craig's list for $50.00.

yeah i have seen these also. I've heard that old, used magnetic ballasts can consume a lot of electrical energy though and not produce as much power as a new one. that's the only reason why i'm buying one new. i'm also assuming its magnetic because it doesn't say electric/digital, but i emailed the company just to be sure. just awaiting a response now.

I hope it works out for you. I like the magnetics because I can work on them and keep them in a like new condition. New parts every three years ensures they burn bright. At $50.00 to rebuild, you can't beat it.
